RE: Full details: New Mercedes SL
Discussion
As others I reserve my judgement until seen in the flesh.
The SL always had some road presence (if only because of the size) that is not evident in pictures.
As said, I like how merc still does some innovative things, like the airscarf a couple of years ago, the wind deflector on top of the E-convertible, the jets in the wipers, it's all small things but it's those kind of things I love in a car, simple but effective things, like the hidden door handles in the 147/156/Civic/Leon.

the styling, for me, is heavy and graceless.
Completely agree.Seriously though.. they have tried to shoehorn a style concept into this car and it does not look great to me either.. back looks CL'y and the front of an SLK.
Lots of videos online now.
I like the way he opens the boot in this one;

My only gripe is couldn't they have found the room to fit two rear seats in there too (albeit tiny ones)? Enough space for a couple of child seats at least.
Don't fall asleep while watching some of the videos.

Cheers Hellbound - watched it silent - didn't fall asleep - it's definitely an SL - onto the trivia: liked that pale gold/bronze colour - much better to my eyes than the silver one that appears later - but then again, I'm prejudiced, I have had enough 'default silver' Mercs to last me a lifetime.
Will it become a Classic?, just like the current model, don't know, but probably will, but either way I really don't care; I'm living for today, not someone else's tomorrow.

Can you be mroe specific, as other than the fact they are both large 2 door cars I see no resemblance??
Well thats because its 'my' opinion. Personally I see a strong resemblance in the front end. Both have a very tall pronounced grill and the shape of the front is very similar. All of the new BMWs seem to be going this way. Its ust what came into my head at a first glance having spend a bit of time looking at the 6 Conv recently at a local dealership.DeadMeat_UK said:
Form an orderly queue behind Elton John and that bloke from XFactor with the big trousers and dodgy hair.
Your point being? Elthon John has had a plethora of Ferraris, Rollers and at one point a XJ220, him buying a new SL would be nothing short of a compliment to the car imho. Edited by ZesPak on Friday 16th December 14:05
Styling is subjective, and we can all argue about it pointlessly till we're blue in the face, so I'll contribute. :; I agree that the BMW 3 Series Coupe/M3 and Audi A5/S5 look great, I consider the styling of the Audi R8 bland at best and that of the MB SLS to be pretty awful, especially around the door and C pillar, where it seems to have stolen some 80's American kit car styling cues. With the roof chopped off, it's a decent retro design but still nothing special. The R230 SL and the old SLR are much more successful designs and are both far more elegant... to my eyes, of course.
