All serious car manufacturers respect their heritage and hold a heritage collection. It is not an optional extra - particularly for prestige cars. Fundamentally it is a vital marketing tool. "A dad takes his 9 year old son/daughter around a collection of old Jaguars... 20 years later and the son/daughter heads to a Jaguar dealer..."

I hope their plans are ways of making the heritage collection more widely available to the public.
That is a tenuous marketing strategy at best!
You only have to look at the displays at events like Goodwood and Techno Classica Essen to realise how much the manufacturers value their heritage and realise the marketing potential.
The strategy is far from tenuous. How many bottles of single malt would be sold without the heritage associated with them? Run well, heritage collections can pay for themselves and certainly do no harm to the brand capital. With the ambitions that JLR seem to have for the Jaguar brand, it should invest in a new facility for the collection. Browns Lane is, it seems, now unfit for purpose (though I will now plan a visit there before it closes), so somewhere new would seem to be in order.

Oh and, as somebody else above said, JLR is more british now than it has been in decades, and is expanding its operations in the West Midlands at quite a rate. So what if the money comes from India? Show me a car company that doesn't have major foreign investment these days.

there is no room at Whitley! They don't even have room for a proper sized damn car park !

A real shame.

I stopped off there on the way back from the Le Mans Classic in 2010. A fantastic place.

Norman Dewis had also stopped off there on his way back and had a great chat with him for half an hour. There was no one else there and, with Norman and all the cars, it was kind of like heaven.

These are dark days for all Jaguar enthusiasts with so much speculation , hearsay and nothing concrete. As we gear up to celebrate 90 years since the formation of the Swallow car Company, the future of the Jaguar Heritage Collection hangs in the balance. A car has worn the famous Jaguar badge since 1935. In my opinion, an opportunity was missed in 2008 when demolition of the Browns lane production facility began. The original factory entrance, Sir William Lyons office, the factory showroom and frontage should have been saved. Jaguar has been associated with the site since 1951 when the late great Sir William Lyons started production there. This piece of England should have remained forever Jaguar. Instead the decision was taken to raise it to the ground and in September this Year, the final chapter of Jaguars illustrious Browns lane history comes to an end as the Heritage centre closes its doors for the final time. The Coventry planning meeting relative to the 19 houses proposed for the site is tonight. Eventually Jaguars presence at Browns lane is likely to be replaced by a blue plaque, explaining what once happened there. In the wake of JLR announcing huge profits it is difficult to understand why there are no specific plans to re home this famous collection. This issue is not recent, it has been on the agenda since the 2008 sale of Jaguar, so why have decisions regarding these unique cars not been made thus far? To date there are no firm plans and the almost 200 strong collection looks set to languish in storage with no public access. Jaguar have said as far as they are concerned it is business as usual for Heritage, well let's clarify what that means. They are set to support premier events around the world such as the Mille Miglia, Goodwood and large automotive shows, these activities centre around approx 15 famous cars such as the Le Mans cars, XJ13, XJ 220 and the iconic E type. These can be collected and delivered from storage as and when required. So what for the other 150 plus cars? As far as the dedicated Heritage team are concerned it is far from business as usual. The archives are set to move in one direction, the workshops have moved to another and the staff are off to an office on an industrial estate near Whitley. Quite how they are supposed to carry out their ambassadorial duties with both Jaguar customers and enthusiasts under these circumstances ceases to amaze me. When asked to see the famous cars, are they to decline or take them to a dusty storage facility, lift a sheet and say " this is what made Jaguar great ! "
There is footage of Mercedes, BMW, Porsche and Audi museums free for all to see on You-Tube ( also on earlier posts on this page ) All their facilities have recently been upgraded and are exceptional. Sir Williams life is often likened to Enzo Ferrari and ironically Ferrari are set to open a 20 million extension to their museum in March dedicated to that remarkable man. This is what we are campaigning for, a dedicated facility for public and enthusiasts alike to interact & appreciate Jaguars colourful past. I feel sure that i speak for all enthusiasts around the world when i ask JLR to take note of the strength of feeling surrounding this subject and ask that they undertake to provide a facility to show the world all that has made Jaguar great.

Was fortunate enough to view the museum a few years ago, before they really began to tear down the rest of the site and turn it into housing. My old man has a Daimler V8 250 so was a nice chance for a few pictures whilst we were there..

Terrible shame really. I just can't understand the complete lack of interest so many of these big companies have in showing off and being proud of their history.. I know money makes the world go round and all that sort of guff but really, in the grand scheme of operating costs for all these factories and so forth, can they not make small concessions?

Pity they can't relocate this to the city centre to go with the British Transport Museum. There's plenty of land waiting to be re-developed around it...

Nobody closes a museum! It is unheard of! It is like spitting in the face of all the good people who have spent years of their lives charishing and looking after the (museum) pieces. Only, Tata also spit in the face of their future customers with an attitude like that! Goind on about the great Jaguar heritage one minute and the next turning around and closing the very window to that heritage. Shame!

This could be a none story, I have copied an update from Jaguar Owners club on facebook below, long and short of it is Ken McConomy from JLR has confirmed that a medium term solution is for staff to move close to Whitley with a long term musuem planned but no announcement on venue yet

The following statement has been issued by Ken McConomy, Jaguar Global PR Director and Jaguar Heritage Trustee

''The Jaguar Heritage trustees and JLR are aware of the increasing rumours around the future of the Jaguar Heritage Museum and its operations.

I want to assure everyone that we have agreed a mid-term solution where Jaguar Heritage staff will relocate to new office premises, close to Jaguar Land Rover's corporate headquarters in Whitley, Coventry. The longer term vision is that we will have an all new Jaguar Heritage museum; however we are not disclosing any further details at the moment.

Hopefully this clarifies the situation and confirms that Jaguar's heritage is very important to Jaguar's new leadership team, in fact we will be making a formal announcement about Jaguar Heritage and its future strategic direction next month. The Jaguar brand will always protect and preserve its priceless heritage.

We will confirm a series of global Jaguar Heritage events for this year, with the team attending an increasing number of activities with our historic sports cars.''

Definitely not a non-story. The statement doesn't say anything to contradict the facts: museum closing, there is no current site for a new museum. It does mention that jobs are secure, which is good news, and adds that long-term the intention is to open a new museum, but when and where remains a mystery at this stage.
Hopefully the original story and the reaction it has got has helped to convince Jaguar that the best way to turn it into a non-story and to make the furore go away is to make definite plans for a new museum, and sooner rather than later. I think we would all be very happy with that outcome.

We'll see what happens. Hopefully it will be good news, would be a genuine shame if it went to the wall.

This is of course in contrast to BMW, their museum/complex is very impressive.

I visited Gaydon recently and took a short video wuch includes the new home for ten of some of Jaguar's most iconic cars - XJ13 included smile The remainder are stored in various locations/warehouses and will be brought out for various events. You can see a short video of the cars' new home here Scroll to the bottom of the page if you don't want to bother with my text whingeing about the closure irked

All very sad really. I find it so disappointing that Jaguar seem to be turning their back on their heritage in this way. Can you imagine the likes of Mercedes, Porsche or BMW doing something similar?

The archive has now been moved from the closed museum at Browns Lane and most is now in deep storage (in a salt mine - honest!). The remainder has been transferred to the British Motor Heritage Museum at Gaydon along with the hard-working Anders Clausager. Although Anders has officially retired, he remains as part-time archivist. For those of you who may not already be aware, Jaguar Heritage have begun offering Heritage Certificates once more. You can see details here For now, there isn't an online order process and you need to complete an application form and return it by email together with your payment. There will be a much improved online payment process on a revamped website just as soon as I get round to it!

I guess Jaguar are far too busy making extremely ugly barges to care about their beautiful sports car heritage.
