Worth trying one but to my mind the answer is "no". The 911 Carrera's great strength is that it manages to combine a reasonable degree of driver appeal with being a very usable daily driver, it makes no sense as a weekend car to me. Back looking at Cerberas then...
The price of special I guess?
Pay yer money and take a chance
I would have the blue one if I had the money. I quite like the interior and blue mix. Is looking slight less tan and more mustard yellow. I am sure you can get a leather cleaner and conditioner to sort it? maybe need a bit more than that.
Boxter prices have come even lower and for that reason, I would chase one of those. I have heard it being referred to as the poors mans porsche, but for me, that is rediculous as it is after all, still a porsche!

I bought a £10k (well £9950 to be exact) 911 3 months ago! its a 2000 C2 in Silver with a good selection of options (18inch turbo wheels, PSE, M030, Sports Seats, Litronics etc) and a full Porsche service history (last 6 years from porsche silverstone)and i am absolutly loving it, still feels great every time i drive it, and i have had nothing but compliments about it! (including from quite a few 'air cooled' fans, and all the tech guys and a couple of customers when i dropped in to Porsche Silverstone). I looked at a about 6/7 with milages from 50k upto 100k and from £9.5k upto £14.5k. I picked my one as it hat the options i wanted, had clearly been looked after and drove very well, depsite having 96k on it. Im a little bit anal when it comes to things on cars, and like them to be as close to perfect as possible, so i had budgeted a couple of grand to sort a few little things out (it needed a minor service, coil packs, and a couple of tyres/Geo, i also had the condensors changed as whilst no leaking there were looking like they might in the not to distant future) I actually used Porsche Silverstone for everything and couldnt recomend them enough, the service was excelent and they even did a deal on the price.
Whilst not the fastest/cheapest/best looking car in the world i think as an all round prospect they are pretty hard to beat and it still does 174MPH and 0-60 in 5 seconds, so its not exaclty slow!
If you want one, and are happy to except that running costs will be higher than a Mondeo then go for it! get a good inspection (or know what you are doing!) and buy on condition, not just on mileague.
Whilst there is the posibility of engine issues, i think they are over played on the internet some what (i was looking and there are very few for sale with blown engines) and to be honest look hard enough and any car will appear to be the most unreliable thing on the plannet!

I know I wanted to. About a month ago I bought this for sub £10k

A timely article for me.
I am seriously tempted and considering spending a little more, say £16k
But a few questions to anyone who wants to offer an opinion.
1. It will be a weekend toy, something to cherish. Is a 911 going to feel special enough?
My daily hack is a nice enough Merc, so will it feel "sufficiently" special unless near the limit?
My Chimeara fitted the bill nicely for years, but I need a little seat in the back.
2. If it is, C2 or C4?
3. Narrow body (say 40th aniversary C2), or wide body C4S
3. Should this be a seperate thread?
Note. No I do not want a BMW E(anything)or M(whatever), or a Toyota Supra Turbo Fandango for £4k, I said "special".
Have I answered my own question, worried Porsche might feel the same...

I myself had a Cerbera for 3 epic years, so I know what you mean.
I replaced that Cerb with a Jagur S-Type R. Why? Because it is so easy to live with.
However back in July I purchased my first Porsche, a Boxster S to be my drive-to-work car.
It is superb!
Anybody who thinks the interior is "poor" does not understand how Porsche do things.
It is "Understated" and the reason for that is the way the car makes "You Feel" when you drive it.
Not how IT feels when you sit in it, in the garage.
I specifically picked the Boxster, because it is mid-engine, convertible and a 2 seater.
The Jaguar does everything else I want.
But the Boxster is all about driving through the twisty bits, with its superb mid-engine balance and after a swift drive you won’t even be thinking about a shouty interior.
Not much help to you I agree, but when I sell the Jaguar I now know it will be replaced with a 996, probably a Turbo though!
I bought a beautiful looking 996 C2 (2000 X plate) with 86000 on it, loads of history including a big recent engine bill from a Porsche main dealer. Drove it nearly 300 miles home, all went well despite horrific weather. Got up the next day, spent all morning cleaning it then went out for some fun. 10 miles later it went bang in a big way. Hartech rebuilt it, £7k but hey; it's only money! It is now my daily driver, quick, smooth, comfortable & doesn't attract any attention. Brilliant! (Grant & his team at Hartech are fantastic btw).
I really love 996s, I think mainly because the train spotter porsche types turn their noses up at them. people forget that in their day, they won nearly every road test going and a plain carrera is a lovely uncluttered vehicle compared with say, the current model (the rear end of which is messy IMO).
However, personally I wouldnt be brave enough to buy a 3.4. Nah, Id save up a bit more and buy a 2001 onwards 3.6 model carrera (or turbo) which i understand are much more robust. The 3.6 carrera tested by Autocar in 2001 was the fastest base model ever tested by them and that includes the 991!

Hmmmmn
I had a mint 5.0 Chimera, and I just don't get why you would look at one if you are considering a 911.
I've never owned a 911 but would prefer one to my late lamented TVR as surely its a better all-round package????
And a Cerbera? Hmmmmn again, can be ruinous if they go wrong and I wouldn't want to receive the bill when an AJP engine lets go....

Surely this is the pick of the 996s on sale: http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...
Sought after color, convertible, low miles, fsh and to top it off owned by a PH member!
What the one that hasn't had a Major service since 06 ? Has a 4 1/2 year gap in its Service History from 04/07 to 08/11 when it did c1200 miles in that time and its last service (if you can call it that) in 2012 was a 'self service' ???Sought after color, convertible, low miles, fsh and to top it off owned by a PH member!
Not sure that's where my 10k would go.

Of course not, turbo engines are very good.
Okay, all without Mezger engines! But the point is they aren't as explosive as some would have you believe and rebuild costs of around £5k are not that horrific (okay 50% of these cars purchase price, but less than half of what Porsche will charge) given you'll be left with an amazing car.I started a topic on the Porsche forum only the other day about sub £10K 911's.
Will defo be going out to see a few in the new year, and see if my 6'4" frame is comfortable in the drivers seat !
Lucky for me I like tip's (long story...) which seem attract less attention from the purists and to be cheaper ?
And why a £10K 911 over a £10K Box ? Well 2 small children at home that daddy has to drop off almost on a daily basis is my reason

Pity you need the "little seat in the back" .... and it depends what you mean by "special".I am seriously tempted and considering spending a little more, say £16k

If you didn't need the seats then I'd say a Cayman ...... or an S1 Elise.
Probably can't beat either of these for fun. My S1 Elise always brings a smile to my face ... even after 14 years of ownership.

It's a fair point, and a slight concern before I viewed it too.Not sure that's where my 10k would go.
The explanation stacked up, and was confirmed by the overall condition and a call to RPM. It was the 11th 996 I looked at and head and shoulders above the rest in terms of condition and driving experience.
As for self service, I would wager the service carried out by me was more meticulous than any dealer or specialist service, plus the fact my neighbour is an ex Porsche mechanic and did it with me at Ramp and Wrench.....
There are similar 996s for £14k......
intresting thread, having ran a sub £5k boxster of similar age for a year including 5 track days a nurberg ring trip and about 10k road miles with no major dramas, i would consider this the next step and up if i had the extra cash. There is a outside chance you could come unstuck and face a large bill but im sure they break fairly well for parts at this price if it went too badly wrong.
(Must be a nice helpful thread if you have one to sell, pleae can someone write an article about how great sub 3k seat leon diesels are as thats what im selling currently).
