A friend recently bought one of these.

He was bored of his much modified VX220 Turbo and wanted something, nice, fun, good looking and convertible that was easier to live with then the VX.

He (like me) thinks the standard Boxster looks terrible and what else is there ?

The even uglier Z4 or 350Z

I originally thought he'd made a mistake but having seen it and been driven in it I think it's a great choice and I don't think he'll lose much in depreciation either.
Yes Ed made a good choice going pork wink

For similar money to a used Spyder a brand new Boxster is 40% stiffer, up to 35kgs lighter than before, drives better, looks MUCH better and the roof folds in seconds with the magic of electricity.

That Spyder might be special but my £40k would go on the new one.
People pay 100k for a 964 that's more than a top spec 991s

Spyders a future classic, as are all ltd odd ball Porsche,s, it just takes a while.
Cars have so call be getting stiffer for 100 years, seems pointless.
The 981 does not drive better imo either after doing side by side tests.

As for 40k ona new one!!! A S with sports chassis , buckets seats etc is 60k not 40k.

Ermmmm Where are you going to get a Boxster S 981 for £40k?? Spyder is lighter than 981, more bhp and has proper steering not electric crap. Don't compare a spyder to a normal boxster this is a 2nd or 3rd car..a toy.

The spyder is the essence of Porsche going back to the 550 Spyder of the 50's!

Similar money now, but buy a brand new Boxster now and I bet there will be a £10k price difference in a couple of years, and not in favour of the regular car...

Lets see... mine weighs 25-50kg more but can carry my kids and has 100+bhp and 130+ lb ft more and cost £20k less.

I don't think I'll downgrade just yet wink

It is not a racing car so that claim is pretty bogus IMHO. It does have a lineage though through other similar rare models such as the 964 speedster. Looking at how much those puppies are worth it doesn't take a genius to recognise what a fantastic long term investment these cars are.

Depends if your chosen poison is depreciation or running costs I suppose.

Having said that, with a very decent chunk of deprecation already have occurred on the Spyder, and only 200 or so in the UK, the mid-term residuals should be pretty good. Prices have been fairly firm recently and quite a few cars have sold, which is curious given the weather.

Also a GT3 is not great for those who fancy the wind in their hair!
Turn the blower up to 11!!

I've had ne since September 2010 and its been a joy as a second car.

Recently took it to France, Italy and Switzerland and did 1600 miles in a week.

Yes it is a little noisy with the roof up, but I've only had a few drops of water sneak in between the back section and the top in torrential rain and strong winds

Only ever seen two others on the road which I love, seen more 997 GT3 RS's than that

Drove a 981 Boxster S recently and as an ONLY car is a much better proposition, but as an extravagance, a toy it is fantastic! I had an R8 V10 before, and although the R8 was awesome in its own way I prefer the Spyder, more fun to drive and seemingly rarer too!

I can't think of anything else I would rather have right now, be interesting to see if Porsche do a 981 Spyder

For a bit of added culture, last spring, at the Destination Nürburgring 5 trackday, Keith Flint from The Prodigy was there in a blue Boxster Spyder...

I like the Spyder.

Would I buy a car without a proper roof? No.

The roof is "proper" it's as watertight as you would ever need, I've driven in torrential rain and had no issues at all. Top gear made out for example that the roof was a chew on, yet you ask any spyder owner if the roof is difficult and they will tell you it's a piece of cake. I've owned normal Boxsters and when you see one parked next to the Spyder they really do look a bit bland and boring.

It is a proper roof.

It simply requires a little work - so it's probably beyond you.

hehe

There does appear to be a lot of bias on this thread from owners.

Each to their own and all that, my point was that for £40k there are other very special Porsche's out there, also including these:

Your also hovering around 997t / Nissan GTR / Audi R8 Money. My Money would go on one of these if I was looking for a performance car I could use every day, having a roof wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

For the record, I actually like the Spyder, the white one I seen in Swansea the other day was very nice, just couldn't spend that much of my hard earned on one whilst such epic machinery lingers around this price. As someone else said, £35k is optimistic, most go for the latter end of £30k.

A Spyder is a convertible so delete all non convertibles and tell us what else is available.

Personally (and I'm a non owner) I think the looks alone justify the price over the Boxster

I wouldn't worry too much about the roof. I even think it looks great on, in a bonneville classic kind of way. The ride, however, is something to get used to. It can get rather uncomfortable, and in my opinion, is harsher than my 7.2 GT3.

No but Papercup on here has a HUGE thread in Readers Cars and he has spent far more (for a higher spec) then me.

The only problem with all those cars you have mentioned is they are coupes not convertibles. I think you would be hard pressed to find a convertible that is as good as a Spyder for less money.

I paid £33000 for mine last week with five months Porsche warranty remaining, it is a 2010 with 3300 miles on the clock and is a lightweight spec.
