Would it not have been cheaper to buy a E46 M3?

If only you could have removed those two extra doors...
I agree the 3 door looks much more desirable (in my eyes).
I might be bias (in fact i am wink ) but in mpsort, dark colour and with the rear roof spoiler I don't think the 5door is a bad looker. It's actually amazing how much owning a car makes you warm to the looks. I remember when these things came out and I would wince at the sight of them.

Mind I still do wonder what they were thinking with the non msport ones. The flared arches on these just begs for a more aggressive front smile
I know what you mean about the looks! Hated them when I first saw them, but come 2008 I had one on the drive. It was only a 5dr 120D sport but I really got to like the way it looked. They came in for a lot of stick, the usual Top Gear stuff where if they don't like a car they go out of the way to rubbish it but I couldn't fault mine. Even the rear leg room didn't seem to be an issue, i'm over 6 foot tall and 15 stone and most of my mates are about the same and we always managed to fit 4 of us in there without any complaints. Much better after ditching the run flats, felt like the chassis could handle a lot more power than the 163BHP it came with. I was going to Bluefin it until the Ex disappeared and took the car with her! Still, I got to keep the M3 so not all bad!

A 130i is definitely on the list if I ever have to get rid of the M3, but for some reason I prefer the look of the 5dr over the 3.

I went from a 130i LE to an e46 M3 CS. The 130i sounds great and the engine is a peach and in 3 door LE spec carbon black looks good to my eyes. I put BMW Performance splitters on mine which gave it the more aggressive look I wanted and fitted eibach springs which were a massive improvement over Msport (better ride and better handling).
I always think its underrated and a lot of people ate up what Clarkson said on TG. What ever you do change the god awful Goodyear Eagle NCT5 (think these were OEM fitment) runflats to non runflats. I didn't keep mine long enough to do this but they are f***ing terrible and if the 130 on TG had these on its no wonder the golf beat it on track.
The only bad point was the steering lacked a bit of feel and was too light IMO

Didn't they change the steering to be electronic or something after a few years? My 55 plate 130i M Sport is wonderful and responsive through all steering.

I have have had a few 3 series and wanted a 330 but once I saw and drove the 130i I was hooked and still am.

magnificent car.

But I do have one issue and that is the rattles, random as they are. The 1 Series certainly rattles in the cab more than any car I have ever owned. Not as much as every normal cheap hire car but hey.

Well you've inadvertently summarised the trade off.

Pre-LCI cars have the lovely hydraulic steering, but post-LCI have a much better interior build quality and parts, LED rear lights and wider wheels, gear change indicator and probably some other bits I've forgotton...

Thank you I was unaware of that, interesting.

The one previous owner had put everything available at the time into the build so I am happy to live with the rattles for the extra toys.

Still a wonderful car and I know the rattles can be fixed if I could be bothered but for me I think it is just part of the car.

Wider wheels? Not heard of that before but would be interested to hear specifics.

I've only ever owned one BMW (E39 540i Sport) and have wanted one of these for a while. Recently my fiancee's dad bought a 2005 120i SE and the interior has put me off a bit, the build quality isn't great really compared to my older E39 with double the milage. I'd like to try a later one, but worry about the steering and engine!

I can't believe no-one's noticed the 4.0L, 420bhp 1 series for sale on Autotrader!

Nice, what about the 130i LE wheels? I'm not sure on them anyway, has anyone got an LE with the normal wheels?

Not sure, what year was the LE produced?

Not a fan of that wheel design, or the chrome line trim tbh.

M208s look best imo, I have a spare set on winters...

Also facelift 130i's had the direct injection engine.
I may be wrong but the N52 engine even on facelift cars is still not DI, which is a good thing.

I believe you're correct N53 were DI, not fitted to 130i..

Not my first choice of car, but a great write up and good to see its being used properly. Enjoy the new brakes!

Great purchase, I had them on my old MKV Golf. If you've got the DS-Performance pads, be careful with them, get them too hot and they'll melt all over the discs... very annoying.

That would suggest the wider 8.5J wheel then...
