Seat Ibiza 1.8 T Cupra

180 PS and so a somewhat surprising 143 mph tops from what is
basically a 4 cylinder FWD shopping trolley, with a larger than
average engine in it.

I well remember hammering down the A5, south of Frankfurt,
and being unable to overtake one.

He was flat out and had the uncommon decency to pull into the middle lane
to let me get past.

Mind you, I am not sure about doing over 140 mph in something so small.

Definitely not a sleeper. Lovely car though.

to 99.999999999999% of the population it is a 5 series touring rep mobile. Until you give it the loud pedal and hear the V10 howl and then use launch control to paint some perfect 11's.

I find it quite depressing that members of a website such as PistonHeads think something like this is a sleeper....???

Anything can look fast with a half decent driver on a mission, ther was a guy in a crew cab pickup the other day and he was doing pretty well, similarly you can get people without a clue driving something half decent and not managing to make it work.

I quite enjoy making a small weedy car go as fast as it can go, makes you think about things so you dont lose momentum.

I find it funny that you don't know what a sleeper is too. It looks very much like a standard 5 series to 99.9999% of the population as I've said. It's doesn't get a second look and that is why I like it. Same for RS2's, RS4's and RS6's in fact pretty much any fast estate car.

Same fking thing!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleeper_(car)

A sleeper (US English) or Q-car (British English) is a car that has high performance and an unassuming exterior.

Mine looks just like a 318d but can hang on to many a Porsche but it's still a Q car, not a sleeper!
I reckon far more people know what an M5 is than know two tailpipes equals 335i/d.

It's a lovely motor your M5 but it's not a sleeper!

Is it really a Q-car even? It has a badge saying M5, four big exhausts, sports suspension, fat tyres, side grilles, sports bodykit.

Sorry, if I saw that, even if I wasn't a petrol head, the last thing going through my mind would be 'this is an average car'.

Some of you may know Nick Butler? He did my dad's sleeper; Ford P100 pickup in Cortina shape, looked stock apart from larger back tyres. 400bhp V8 under the bonnet...

Well it appears on the sleeper page on wiki so it's good enough for me but I'll let you all debate and argue about that.

no sleeper though. If it had the badges, wheels, non m-5 wings and single tip exhaust from a 520d, you'd be closer.

Those are the most unsubtle tailpipes I've ever seen on a five-series.

But even the slowest 5 Series is likely faster than Average Jo's hatchback, in fact the slowest 5 Series stands a pretty good chance of being faster than the vast majority of every day vehicles you see on the road. So you'd have to be pretty dim to not think an expensive looking new BMW isn't going to be fast.

A sleeper would be something like a 1990's Citreon Xantia but with enough power to level peg with your pseudo supercar.
