Hm. If I already had the baby, I'd get the cars you've mentioned. For now, there's just you and the wife so get a 2 seater something. Someone will be along shortly to say MX5 but there's a whole host of choices. S2000? Chimaera? Boxster? Z3M?

Sadly a) family consists of three of us already

b) we live at the top of a very steep hill and I would cack myself on the ice in an Elise. Maybe an s2000 or Z4 though if I am being selfish.

One of these......
Nothing wrong with that interior, well not to me anyway. Always thought of Golfs as just a little bland !!
I think that is a really good looking car much nicer than a Mk5 Golf externally IMO.

The frustration comes when I sit inside one, the interior is absolutely woeful IMO, the thing that really annoys me when I'm sitting there is that I can't help but feel VAG intentionally made it cack so it wouldn't tread on the Golfs toes, it's a real shame.

I would also echo the thoughts about the FN2 Type R, definitely worth a look at this price range, I actually think they are better value than the previous model at this point in time and I think the interior especially the dashboard is excellent.

Colour aside, that's really quite nice. Hmm. I wonder if I could swap my CR 170 FR for a Cupra.. hmm.

What's the driving mechanics? I like the C30, it's a funny looking thing, just wonder if big engine translates to good road manners in the twisties.

Sorry, can't help with that as I've not had the pleasure.

I've previously owned a MK5 Edition 30, MK5 R32, S2000 and Civic Type R FN2.

My favourite? The FN2 without a doubt. Whilst the R32 had a fantastic noise, it felt heavy and was incredibly thirsty. The Edition 30, whilst undoubtedly a great all rounder, never felt in any way exciting. The S2000 is incredible, but not very practical.

I found the FN2 interior a much nicer place to be than the Golf. Probably because with the GT Pack, you get a lot of kit as standard. Over 3 years it was absolutely bulletproof. Only thing I could complain about was the slightly harsh ride, but I had the 19" Rage alloys so was probably my own fault. It was incredibly practical as well.

If you have any more in depth questions feel free to ask.

On all VAG cars of that vintage just keep an eye out for ABS pump failure. £1100 + fitting. It's what caused us to trade our 07 Leon diesel.

We originally nearly went for an FR when we were shopping for a Leon/Golf/A3 but the ride was shocking.

Very common fault, normally you can buy a repair kit from VAG it's around 2 or 300 quid if I remember correctly.

^Definitely worth a try before buying a VAG car. I've driven a Mk5 Golf GTi, I own a Skoda Octavia vRS and was tempted to swap to an FN2. Couldn't get the deal to work for me at the time but a lovely car.

The ride's still hard on 18's. Do try one though- if you can live with that, they're very satisfying cars in many ways.

I would rather nail my cock to a rabid wolf than by any VAG thing, I'd prefer a 5k Maserati 3200 and another 5k to fix any electrical gremlins and enjoy the rather amazing noise it made as I wafted past all the rep-tat on the motorway...
Or an Alfa V6 156/166/GTV
Or a rebuilt/restored MG B GT

Or something different from the dull German silver and grey rubbish that hogs the outside lane...

maybe I'm a little twisted and having a mid life crisis...

Had an alfa, owned an mg, love the maser but not seen any with boomerang lights a for 5k?

VAG aren't ultra reliable but I need something driveable every day and a 3200 wouldn't be the answer. Be off the rroad half the time I think.

They're clearly going to go for more than £5k .... lol. Not really sure if you're post was serious or not! Running a Maserati vs a MK5 golf GTI.... every year you better be able to put aside £3k in running costs!

Mk5 Edition 30 is a cracking car - a mate has one remapped to 285bhp and it flys. Regular GTI is pretty good car but on back to back test drives we went for the mk5 gt tdi 170. Cracking car - more than quick enough and returns nearly 60mpg on a long run. worth a look if you can stomach an oil burner.
