Perhaps i'm missing something but check these stats from 1987....

0-60mph:7.9secs
Top speed:114mph
Power:99bhp
Torque:96lb/ft
Weight: 782kgs

From a 3 cylinder 993cc turbo hatchback......the little old Charade Gtti....ok the economy/emissions would be worse but really we're nearly 30 years on, that's not a huge amount of progress is it?? incidentally if you can find a Gtti, what a weapon they are biggrinbiggrinthumbup

Love the idea of it but, having read the Swift report the other day, I think I'd save myself £2k and take the shorter trip to my nearest Suzuki dealer. Not much in the distances to each admittedly, but much nicer to take a trip 2 villages away than through the centre of Taunton atm!
Indeed. I somehow don't think I'll be cancelling my swift sport order for one of these 'ST wannabes'smile

Wonder what its Euro Ncap score would be ?

Cant really compare, modern cars have a lot more expectations, did the Charade have electric everything and air conditioning ?

It had electric windows, electric sunroof, electric mirrors, yes to aircon (certainly in the one I had)...believe me i'm not blind to it's shortcomings, but, the Fiesta isn't really massively headline grabbing really...

I can recall the days when a 999cc short stroke Racing Mini Cooper S with drainpipe exhaust and a huge Weber carb 45DCOE that spat fire at you, was approaching the magic 100bhp/litre. Mate of mine built one that revved to over 8500rpm with its high lift cam, racing pistons and conrods .............. and boiled all its water just nipping round the block to try it out. I knew we should have changed the water pump and fitted a new radiator!

This probably explains why Mountune haven't brought out a tune for the 1.0 ecoboost even though been promising it for a while. Would have pee'd on Fords chips a bit
Mountune have a tune for the 1.0 Ecoboost, the MP135 kit. It has not been released for fitting at Ford dealers yet (this car may have something to do with it- I don't know), but it can be fitted at Mountune HQ in Essex

Also there was talk about this getting a 6 speed. CAR had a scoop on it in March. Shame they have stuck with a 5-speed, I have one and like it a lot for the mileage I do. However it does need a 6-speed. The gearing is quite long.

Mk3 XR2i managed 8.9 to 60 from 110bhp.

106 GTi 7.9 seconds from 120bhp.

Cars have become lardy.

I wonder how easy it would be to get hold of that engine to put in my classic mini, 140bhp 700kg hellllloooo
Exactly what I've been planning to do, but in the rear, with rear wheel drive Z cars style. Would be a hoot!

Would be a great engine for something like a Caterham, would then be quite fast and still have massive mpg.

My Astra GTE16V, 150BHP, weighed about a ton, scrabbled to 60 in just under 7 seconds according to some testers.

Still dislike the new front on the Fiesta but I'd have one of these if I was in the market.

Bet it wouldn't be anywhere near £16k in reality.

Nobody with a braincell will pay anywhere near 16K! The ST turbo is only £1K more, cheaper with haggling. Even a quick search gives £500 off from a main Ford dealer before you start the sob story:

Reading this article reminds me that I don't live too far from Lower Dunton Road. I must go and have a go. I remember reading a story that Basildon Council wanted to resurface it, but Fords asked them to wait until they had 3D mapped it so they could recreate it at Lommel biglaugh

What's the correct cc/£ ratio we should be aiming for?

3 cylinder, turbocharged, lightweight and fun you say?

0-60 under 8 seconds a tad under 100bhp and well under 800 kilos.

I'm not going to moan about the cost of new cars. But I would have to sell my Elise twice to afford this.
