RE: Mazda RX-8 PZ: PH Carpool
Discussion
The R3 was tempting, and definitely looks more aggressive, but for me the Rex was meant to be a 'cheap' stop gap car for a year or 2 while saving for something quicker. Having said that, I've since fallen in love with it (hence the urge to 'personalise/upgrade' it). With R3's still in the £8k - £12k range, I would have been more tempted to climb into a 350z or E46 M3 for that money.
Out of interest, out of the many RX8 owners on this thread, has anyone had their RX8 fettled by the guys at Pettit Racing?

I've not, but I have spoken to people who have. They have a really good reputation and had a great Supercharger kit for the 8, though sadly its no longer for sale. StarmistBlue400 said:
Loved my 231. It didnt use as much oil as the hype on forums say and yes the MPG was crap but we all know that.
One of the best handling cars I have owned but could also handle long trips with ease and family duties too.
The only thing I never knew was the problem with coil packs and CATs. The day I sold mine the coils packed up for the new owner, luckily it was sorted by the extended warranty I had with the car. I heard from the owner that the CAT packed up during his ownership too.
You really need to fit a Borla, they sound brilliant
loved my 231 also. was gutted when i had to sell due to emigrating from the UK. over here in Canada they have held their value considerably better than in the UK. loved all the same things cited above and elsewhere - handling, looks, practicality. oil issues are overhyped by people who fail to understand the engine (hint: follow the maintenance shceudle and recommendations and you'll have a lot less trouble), and yeah the fuel economy could be poor, but if you have a performance car, you most likely don't have economy top of your list. loved that it was designed with life in the real world in mind and not with 0-60, top speed, 'ring laptime top trumps numbers. just a great car out on any b-road and would handle motorway duties just fine. One of the best handling cars I have owned but could also handle long trips with ease and family duties too.

a coil on mine went too, cost mucho denarii to fix, and obviously spraying unburnt fuel onto the front face of the cat didn't do that any good. but, in the main pretty reliable and hugely fun, yet practical, car.
just waiting for my man-maths to come back a bit so i can get one to have done up. still missing that handling.

If I were you I wouldn't buy the K&N Typhoon induction kit. As a member and regular visitor to the RX8 owners club forums, I've seen many tales of people buying induction kits that subsequently impair performance and even potentially cause problems. The K&N is a regular offender in this regard.
If you want to go ahead with one, I would suggest the Racingbeat REVI kit or for a bit more noise, an AEM induction. They get good reviews, although any power gains are negligible as no one has managed to improve greatly on the stock airbox.
Hope that helps.
Agree - stay away from the performance sapping Typhoon. Tyres first & full suspension geometry check. I cannot honestly believe you've given such a good write-up with such crap tyres! Really - you will find it transformed with a decent set of Vredestein Sessantas on there

It would have got done this month, if not for the money needed for Coil packs (and a new front door for my house - the least exciting way to spend £1000). Tyres are definitely first on the list after pay day...
What about rust? Don't all Mazdas start rusting inside out around the arches and sills the minute they leave the factory.
I almost fancy one of these as a stop gap. I'm put off by the thought of the hassle trying to shift it on again. The cheap car classifieds on gumtree etc are absolutely filled with the things.

I ran a PZ as a sensible daily for 2.5 years and it was excellent. The rear doors made it fantastic fot putting young children in the back.
It did the school run and numerous trips to the Ring, all it needed was yellow stuff pads, uprated brake hoses and good fluid, as was discovered on the first trip
Upon purchasing I fitted new coils, uprated leads and spark plugs as recommended by the owners club.
As well as the daily duties and Ring trips it excelled at Donnington as well.
Totally relaxing with all the toys and lovely cruise, but instantly alive on a B road or track.
Was sad to see it go but when daily miles went from 4k per year to 24k per year it had to.
It was the best all round car I had in 20 years.
(Still had good hot compression when I sold it at 56k miles!)

I bought your PZ and 2.5yrs later it's still going strong just passed 70k.
Last year I renewed the coils with the Rotary Revs upgraded coils & other than that it's just been regular servicing.
Totally agree with your twin personality comments.
I can vouch for Scott too, he can bloody drive!

No issues on my 56 car but condition does vary greatly.I almost fancy one of these as a stop gap. I'm put off by the thought of the hassle trying to shift it on again. The cheap car classifieds on gumtree etc are absolutely filled with the things.
You won't find the small adds full of PZ's & R3's. Genuinely the suspension tweaks transform the car.

Tempted to swap the Ovlov for one of these to add some spice to daily driving.
I highly recommend it!I reviewed mine on CT recently - using it as a DD for the last two years has been awesome!

One other daily issue worth noting though is that even when trying to "take it easy" to be economic I'd end up revving it to 9k just because I could and I loved the noise it made.
One of the fastest cars I have ever driven was the RX7. I had a brief fling with one in the US and with no issues with fuel to worry fully explored the car. I've often considered one in the UK but I think that one summer in California with a company fuel card will never translate. Wonderful cars.
