Being very much part of 'scene' at the moment, I'm surprised people think it's dying down.

Things have changed from the past, but it's still very much alive and well. Things have got a lot more expensive, finance is everywhere, and a vast majority no longer care about performance, mainly due to things such as fuel costs, insurance, and the police.

It's all very stance/drift at the moment, and I can't see it going away any time soon, tastes are evolving, air/hydros becoming even more popular as police crack down on static cars.

There are more shows than you can shake a stick at now, in the summer it's almost one a weekend, and there's still a fair few magazines supporting it too;

Fast Car
Performance VW
Performance BMW
Audi Tuner
Fast Ford
Classic Ford
Retro Cars
Performance French Cars
Banzai
Jap Performance

And many more I can't name off hand.
Is fast car still going? Crickey, I had a letter posted in there about 23 years ago.

Alive and well. Just been sold to Kelsey Publishing however, and most of the staff made freelance, but I don't think it's going anywhere soon.

I always think it's funny that here in the UK the majority of road user look down unfavourably on any obviously modified cars, whereas in the USA it's just considered a normal thing to do to any car that isn't appliance-like
One of the failings of the British is our desire to look down on others in order to make ourselves feel better. A hangover from a hierarchical society I suspect.

Fast car used to be a proper tuning mag, then it decided to follow Max Power and focus more of silly body kits, subwoofers and topless women.

there's also a fair bit of modding in the UK American car scene.

Mine - not a lot has been done, but enough to make it 'individual' (just like the other million+ Mustangs! lol)

standard

It's all very stance or outright performance now, just following the scene really.

Wide arch body kits are making a comeback, Liberty Walk and Rocket Bunny being the big two, or generic overarches. Body kits have been replaced more with racecar inspired aero, splitters, diffusers, canards, spoilers etc.

Basically all the Max Power type stuff is now what's ruining the public perception of the young car modifier, as I don't know of anyone who thinks its cool to go on cruises and do burnouts etc, but because of them even 'static' meets are heavily policed when all people care about is how good the car looks sat still.

I kind of want to go and buy a peugeot 306, get a peco big bore 4, lower it a bit and fit some nice 17's. Why? Because that was my first car and with the exception of the peco, they were all the mods I wanted to do but could not afford frown Now I can...but I feel like I will drive it once then be like....eugh.

I still modify my cars as i enjoy working on them. I am a member of the big sound system crew - this was my last car https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJg0Qeethlwhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_xgwiI25BM and even though im not going that big in my current cars im still going quite silly

Why? Well why not tbh, gives me something to do in the garage on an evening

I modified my Focus ST quite a bit, 100bhp extra, bigger wheels, big brakes etc. have started on my Focus RS.

Haven't been to a show in a while, but will be getting back into it this year, but there's still quite a lot of people modifying their cars (also a lot still ruining them as well tongue out).

I still see quite a lot of ridiculously, impractically low BMWs and Hondas about. Fortunately the trend for attaching enormous fibreglass bodykits has died off so maybe they're just not as instantly noticeable any more.

Was following a modified BMW "stanced" yesturday....e36 estate. Wierdly it had a ton of negative camber on the front wheels, but the back ones were OEM and in OEM camber....straight. Looked fking wierd.

I've got a modded car! (hurrah!) but you wouldn't know it except for the non-standard exhaust and it sounds different. All of the bodywork, wheels and interior is as it left the factory.

It's running a fully forged engine converted to twin scroll and lots of uprated parts. It's making about 130bhp more than it left the factory with. I never set out to modify the car but to replace tired parts with equal quality or higher quality parts and I ended up uprating a lot of the mechanical bits of the car!

Insurance is no problem although I'm in my early 30's with full no claims and a clean license.

Very true this. One of the main things I hate about us Brits.

For drifting, the camber increases the contact patch when turning, increasing grip.

If you lived near Telford at the weekend you probably are no longer worried about modified cars disappearing.

Especially at Ultimate Dubs this year, if anyone was caught in that jam on the way in they can tell you all you could see is modified cars left, right and center for a whole 2 hours or so.

Or in my case, being stuck by lots of DERVs around you stinking up the place! tongue out

Still alive and well. Here in Aberdeen we try organise as much as possible, but it's hard to do so with the negative stereotype it has (sadly it's sometimes justified...).

Our last few big meets have had around 700-1000 folk coming along, some awesome cars, some not so but generally all with the same mindset. Sadly when the numpties come out the news spreads like wildfire and tarnishes it.

The ford focus that went on fire in 2013, yeh that was at our meet, I was parked about 5 spaces down from that car. Was absolutely raging.

Just got to look in the right places! Driftland opened here in Scotland and has been a huge success for drift days, shows, local cleaning companies selling products etc!

Retro style wide arche mods bolted/riveted on show.

There's a plenty of subtle or performance based mods which are not visible or cosmetic. My Boxster has a few under the skin mods but aside from the replacement rear spoiler you'd barely tell the difference.

I do think finance has been the difference. The company next door to mine is full of 20-somethings and it seems they'd rather own an Audi or Mercedes (in white, natch) with the smallest diesel engine to give the perception of being as rich as them folk in Chelsea these days. Is that any worse than when i used to have the loudest exhaust possible on my slammed Clio to attract all the fanny in town??
