The non-S 718's now very neatly carry customers out of the top of the VW range into the indulgence "look no kids" market ...

I would have no concerns about driving a poverty spec 718 --- the lack of gadgets is one of the things I like so much about the classic Porkers --- and this platform is so amazingly practical --- 280 litres of boot space for a start ???

A his and hers boot ??

For me there is nothing "poverty" about the look of this car !!

That price will include NOTHING that you would expect as standard - you're looking at £15k of extras realistically
Not really, depends on the buyer. I would rather a lower base price with pricey options personally (Not everyone chooses half the options)

For me this is THE Porsche to have, its breadth of capabilities are amazing. Track days, pan continental cruiser, back lane scrapper, daily driver. All with fantastic handling, thorough engineering, impeccable build, amazing fuel performance and a thoroughbred heritage.
It has all the real world performance you want allied to being rated one of the best handling cars in production, allied to top real world practicality.

The new 4 cylinder engine is fantastic. Saves weight, saves fuel, gives masses more torque. For real world driving it is vastly better than the 6 it replaces. And with PDK to make the very most of it.

One of these, fully loaded, is far more PH than a poverty spec 911 for the same money. An incredible ownership proposition.

Serious question: have you actually driven a 981 S or GTS in anger before writing that?

Doesn't the 4-pot weigh more than the old six-pot? smile

Just look at the torque curves. A 981 wouldn't see which way a 718 went.

Because the 718 driver fell asleep at the wheel and drove off a cliff. getmecoat

I'll take that as a no then hehe If you think bags of low end torque and a less interesting top end make it a better sportscar engine, I think you may be on the wrong forum....

ETA: still at least the new engine has fixed the long gearing issue, before you couldn't rev it out sensibly, now there's just no point biggrin

fundamentally ALL the major manufacturers need to find ways to comply with regs, offer products that keep up with the competitors in terms of performance, handling and economy, and also have that intangible 'want factor'. It's a tall order. This is clearly Porsche's pop at it.

I tried to configure a 718S Cayman, but the site crashed I think. Just for fun and to look at the new colour and wheels etc.

I think we'll stick with our man-box, PTV, X73 981 GTS thank you please.

The configurator doesn't seem to be up for the 718 Cayman yet, presumably because they have not finalised pricing

Yes it does!

Cayman and Cayman S

I've managed to look at most of the new bits and bobs now.

I do like the Bordeax leather option!

Also, GT Silver is now a normal metallic option, not £1600 like Carmine.

I don't see anyone actually turning down a Porsche on the grounds that the engine is low rent and then opting for a car that has an engine from a Toyota executive minicab?
Really bro? Why would reliable engine from reliable manufacturer be a bad thing if it can sound like this https://youtu.be/R1pU_tfMAUY

Just had a random thought about Porsche and their new four cylinder turbo engines.
Is a 2.0 litre four cylinder engine inherently more economical than a six cylinder 2.0 litre one? I don't see how
It is... in official EU tests. In real life those who want to extract performance will most likely find that fuel consumption might be higher than the 6 cyl (riding on boost = increased fuel demand). Plus lean running engines produce more NOx which as we know is a great thing for human beings. Ecology fkology, if you know what I mean.
