I actually saw one driving the other day and was also stuck in traffic next to it. Surprisingly its an extremely handsome car. Not ugly IMO. I don;t disagree the front needs a little work, but I'm sure they'll be a facelift in due course to sort this.
I'd say if you saw it for real, you'd have a different view to that based on internet pictures.
Certainly in the land of SUV's and 4x4's, it has some serious presence.
seen several IRL and while you're right - it isn't as ugly as in the photos (that would be hard TBH) it is still U.G.L.Y.. I suspect that the diesel actually is in keeping with the character of these sorts of cars (as long is it can't be heard inside) but it really is a look that only a mother could love (and even then only for short periods!)I'd say if you saw it for real, you'd have a different view to that based on internet pictures.

can see a few of the DFS type sofa company bosses buying these. 50 plus, died hair, Marbella tan and some overpriced sparkly watch.
About 5 stereotypes too many in that quote ...I suggest your post was motivated by envy.

Not really a Range Rover is a proper off roader albeit one that's got lots of bells and whistles to cater for the fact most of the buyers won't go off road.
However it's a bit like supercar syndrome how often do you see a supercar actually going at supercar speeds, not very often but a big part of the ownership experience is knowing the performance is their.
This is a fancy X5, nothing more, nothing less, this is hardly going to touch their sales
It won't take the crown from RR because it can't do what most people never want to do.....?However it's a bit like supercar syndrome how often do you see a supercar actually going at supercar speeds, not very often but a big part of the ownership experience is knowing the performance is their.

And if you've driven one (and an X5) you'll know it is no more a fancy X5 than a Continental GT is a fancy BMW 420.
FWIW, it won't take the crown from RR, because Bentley don't want it to be on every other driveway in every middle-to-upper class area of the UK.
Unfortunately this type of car is what the market demands - that market is some of us & our fellow citizens. If Bentley don't do this then they fall behind on sales.
Is it a travesty to petrolheads both Jaguar & Bentley make these things - yes, but otherwise they get left behind & miss the golden dollar. If no one wanted them they wouldn't sell. Besides who looks at a derv Range Rover with distaste these days? I guess we have to grin & bear it, but you don't have to buy one.
Lets hope TVR don't offer a diesel variant or front wheel drive version of their new model, even Maserati have fallen foul....

Lest we forget, its often these 'travesties' that facilitate the creation of the cars we do approve of from manufacturers! Is it a travesty to petrolheads both Jaguar & Bentley make these things - yes, but otherwise they get left behind & miss the golden dollar. People who could/would never buy a Bentley complaining about a car that people that could, do. Now criticising the manufacturer for making more of a car that is already outstripping supply, and for putting a more suitable, very new-tech engine in such a car.
I'm sure Bentley are gutted to lose majority of your support
Ah, ok, I will pipe down, and lets just have those high net worth individuals on the thread allowed to voice and opinion, might go a bit quiet.....I'm sure Bentley are gutted to lose majority of your support
My point was why would the people who could/would buy one go for a diesel, hi tech or not, it is still a diesel, in a Bentley but I guess new ground is being broken all the time in terms of market demand dictating what is produced, Jaguar did it, I just thought Bentley prices and clientele are way above wanting a diesel engine, but Range Rover owners generally seem to go for diesel and this is in shouting distance of higher end Range Rovers
We all make choices, I chose a petrol V8 over a diesel V6.

It's most deffo a proper off roader but like he said not many will bother venturing offroad but good to know it's there!
Ostentatious, horrible, pointless, ugly...I could rant all day.
I'm not a fan of SUV's to start with, but at least the Range Rover (albeit not as much as the old one) has an aura of class, and looks like it could be driven by the "Gentry".
Why would you therefore spend a further £40k on this...most likely because your career is in the Premier League, and you have no class whatsoever.
If you aren't of that ilk, and you want a classy, diesel SUV it would be a Range Rover all day long, and you won't look like a complete toss pot.
The world needs less cars like this.

Quite; the problem Bentley may have with the diesel is that it may be seen as 'too cheap' - there's a chance that they may have to increase the price to keep it seen as 'suitably aspirational'. (Either that, or they're happy to cater to the 'proles' knowing that the top-spec petrol models are suitably out of reach.)It puts RR in a difficult position - they have to strike that tricky balance between keeping it cheap enough that they sell volume and expensive enough that it's still seen as a highly desirable vehicle; it wouldn't surprise me that the price of top-spec RR's will rise considerably to put them on level-pegging with the Bentley. Of course, the ace card that the RR has is the off-road capability - that might be enough to differentiate the two brands in a buyers eyes.

Don't assume that people who can afford a £135k SUV don't care about money. £135k is not the territory of Oligarchs only. I know three owners of Bentaygas, two would have gone for a diesel if it meant no real loss of performance and reducing the need to fill up every 200 miles which they do now. All three have not bought these as a performance car with an ultra petrolhead viewpoint. They have been bought as large cars to ferry the family around in supreme comfort. All used to drive Range Rovers. All also have at least one other car that is more of a sports option. Why the hell would this and of person spend an extra £30k for a car that will never really go faster, will be more inconvenient just so that the silent engine runs on a different fuel??
It's a shame that a new engine, triple turbo, giving 435bhp, 660lb ft of torque is being decried/ignored purely because it uses the wrong fuel?

I dont get it,
"I am going to spend 150 grand on a honking great luxury Bentley SUV, but buy a diesel engined one to save a few quid on fuel, me being thrifty and all"
Its like spotting Richard Branson doing his shopping in Lidl or Madonna wandering round Primark.
Some seriously wealthy people got wealthy in the first place by being frugal - they don't like 'giving' their money away. Old habits, etc.."I am going to spend 150 grand on a honking great luxury Bentley SUV, but buy a diesel engined one to save a few quid on fuel, me being thrifty and all"

The diesel one will do the job just fine, possibly better for some circumstances like range and perhaps towing a massive horsebox, i was just thinking Bentleys would be immune from diesel, but we didnt think for a while there would ever be a Bentley SUV.
Will Rolls Royce do a diesel though ?

As has been said, most will be funded through companies, not purchased. Therefore there are quite a few individuals who could be driving one if they so wished. The fact that for most on here a RR is still the more interesting option should be of interest to a manufacturer who is competing against them?I'm sure Bentley are gutted to lose majority of your support
