I'm squinting hard, and I don't really see much B, A or original TF in there. But so what, what a modern, generic-ish, but nice looking thing.

It will be as heavy as it needs to be sadly, but 300bhp and rear wheel drive (hopefully) sounds great. Let Lotus tune the suspension and steering and it could be a very nice GT style sportster/cruiser type thing.

On the other hand, it can't see over hedgerows, lacks a commanding driving position and room for all my st that comes with a busy active lifestyle, and it's not grey and German either, but then I guess nothing is perfect.

It looks like it was designed by AI, with lots of elements taken from other cars. It's an OK looking car, just totally derivative and without the badges it could easily be a kit car. The elephant in the room - and I'm not really talking metaphorically - is this:

It must look even better at a motor show seemingly populated only by chubby SUVs [...] apparently the firm has endeavoured to keep the Cyberster under two tonnes
So rather than a chubby SUV, it's a chubby "sports car". It goes without saying, that is far too heavy. You can say all you want about the weight being low, but you still have to get it stopped and turned.

I'm sure someone will work out how to make a decent EV sportscar, but this lard-arse isn't it.

ETA - it'll probably cost a bloody fortune too.
Exactly what I thought, a lazy AI too. JLR F-Type clone with 90's lambo door kit. No thanks.

Good looking car, but like others, I've grown very uncomfortable with buying anything Chinese now (been there - lovely people, but like a lot of the world, unfortunately governments no longer reflect the attitudes, beliefs and character of the people they represent).

So yeah, while it may be pretty much impossible to avoid Chinese made products in our every day consumer goods - choosing not to buy an entire Chinese made car is a start........ and ya have to start somewhere.

  • Incidentally, my phone is a Sony Xperia...... Made In Japan.

This thread is comedy gold.

Who owns Volvo?
Who owns Lotus?
Been in a London black cab recently?

Your car was most likely, in part, manufactured with the assistance of a Kuka robot. Kuka are owned by Midea.

Good luck avoiding the Chinese.

But if one is to make America great again, one must. There is no room for individual thought or reasoning. This car is an open threat to The Collective!! biggrin

I think the discomfort around buying Chinese stuff is valid. Yes it’s unavoidable that you’ll end up with some but if you can do less to indirectly fund the putting of Uyghurs into concentration camps that’s a good thing, even if you can’t avoid it entirely. I own a Lenovo laptop, though, so I can’t be too sanctimonious.

That said, it’s refreshing to see someone actually doing a properly new mass production sports car. The last one we got over here would be, what, the Alpine? The Lotus Emira, maybe? Looking at the figures it makes and MG’s usual prices this seems more Cayman rival than 911 and, regardless of whether it’s funding a regime out of Orwell’s worst nightmares, we badly need more of those.

Lot of people objecting to this car due to its Chinese links.

Ironically objecting using their Chinese made phones. But hey .. always good to make a stand and only focus on the parts that you want to.

Think the car looks great.
It’s the same annoying position again and again that doesn’t stand up to any scrutiny. Also known as whataboutery.

So in your world people must be either perfect of completely amoral? I think it’s just an excuse for you to give up, personally, and allow yourself to buy whatever cheap goods are convenient to you. “Oh it’s made by slaves and sponsors an evil regime? Ooo look at this thing you bought though that’s not very good either is it?! So I’m going to pretend we’re all morally equal”.

In summary, the car looks superficially great, but it should be a no from anyone who thinks about it for more than 20 seconds (admittedly few these days).

Puzzling!!

These awful looking BMWs! everyone says it's pandering to Chinese tastes.

But the Chinese manufacturers are making some nice looking cars even if they are EV and weigh a ton (x2).

I'll take that MG and stick in a V6 or V8, hell! I'd even accept the 999cc triple in my Dacia.

What's the 'etc.', as it's a pretty easy decision to make for most people to NOT buy a Lotus, Volvo/Polestar or MG. Unless you mean LDV vans or London Black Cabs? I think I can live without owning one of them too, but still curious as to what other manufacturers fall in to your 'etc.' category.

You don't see any difference between spending 50k 100% of which goes to the Chinese government (who are economically, strategically and now militarily aligned against us) and 50k on a non-Chinese car maybe 2-3k of which goes to China for cheap IC's, sensors and LCD's? Incidentally, the IP of the latter is mostly owned by western OEM suppliers. "While we're at it", yes you can make an effort to not buy Chinese made consumer goods, I do, but in any event again large difference between a whole car and a speaker. Not always possible to avoid of course and sometimes just impossible to know but in the case of MG, you know full well.
I just don't care, at all.

And neither do any of the people looking for a decent cheap electric car, hence the MG4 BEV selling so well in the UK.

Looks great but I would never have guessed MG. Surely that's a bad thing if you've gone to the trouble of buying up the name and all the history that comes with it. I would expect to see hints of Midget or MGB in there.
