I know what you mean before the GTR I had an Evo 6, once that went I looked at the E30's but after driving a few they just felt gutless.
I was shown what matters the first time I took the GTR on a circuit... I had my arse handed to me by a far far better driver in a pretty much standard E30!

RX-7

Shop carefully, but they are a cracking chassis with enough power. Spend as much as you can (don't look at anyything under about £6000) and look at several; the array of rubbish and questionable history around is shocking. I looked at several before i found mine and have since helped another guy look for something good. Lots of past-their-best-and-big-bills-on-the-way cars about.

Very special car though.

Havoc, what are the prices on DC2's like stability wise?

liner33, (god I hate the term liner! its a car not a boat!) You say 'good ones' are keeping their prices, are they actually selling though. What would have sold for 15k last year is now struggling to get 11-12k, 10-12k R32's are now struggling to get 8-9k. Even tuned 34's are going for under 30k now what would have easily sold for low-mid 30's a year or so ago.
I've had my GTST over 18mths and when i was buying i looked at R33 GTR's at garages for £13k , R32's were £7-8K at that time as well , many people are living in the past WRT prices, everything is depreciating the motor trade is very stale. Long term i would rather have my money in something like a Skyline than a beemer

You can stereotype any car seems a silly thing to do imo. It also depends on whether you get hung up on such things or not , i dont.

I can agree about having money in a Skyline rather than 'any' old BM, but were talking E30 M3's here that have proven to just appreciate in value for good cars. Comparing Skylines, (and no offence here) GTS variants in particular to classics like the E30 for value/depreciation is like comparing chalk and cheese.

With reference to what you say about seeing cars at the prices I mention 18 months ago... those were the cheap ones back then! Id hate to see how little they go for now! wink

Oooh! I know what I would buy...

A late model C4 Corvette.

£10k would get you an early nineties face-lifted example with 300 bhp. 2 seater with enough space for luggage. 6-speed manual is available too. 0 to 60 is around 5.5 seconds... over 160 mph top speed.

If you can put with LHD it is a stonking car for the money.

LHD though, don't fancy another at this time. Good car though.

That 7 grand Renault Alpine A610 I posted the link to yesterday was described as an 'appreciating' classic. So good the price is now £8499!

I didnt compare the GTS , i suggested the 33 GTR or a 34 GTT as both can be had for the same kind of money . A stock GTS is only worth £3-4k so like the R32 GTR doesnt meet the £10k mandate unless you want to pay well over the odds

Good suggestions but a bit out of the parameters. Quattro is ancient and Vette is LHD.

Found this, looks cheap...

What the hell is that thing! I've never seen one of those before, kind of looks like an old porsche from the back. and a 200sx from the front, a renault!

The car you are looking for is an Audi S4 (B5 shape). 2.7 V6 30V bi-turbo lovelly!

265BHP to start with that will turn into ~320BHP at least with a simple remap.

Not an everyday sight and one with a stock exterior like mine a real wolf in sheeps clothing.

Practical 4 door saloon with a bite.

Sorry folks another what car thread, I would appreciate your ideas though.

Criteria is:
under £10k
Manual gearbox
250+ BHP or a power to weight ratio which would give similar performance, car can be mildly tuned to reach this figure.
No rag tops, sorry MX-5 fans.
Something that isn't available as a mainstream model e.g. Focus RS, M3 - although I will make exceptions for rarer stuff e.g Lotus Carlton.
Decent sized boot, or rear seat space to put stuff on e.g. 2 persons luggage

Looking for something that will depreciate slowly and a bit different, hence the modern classic tag.

Any ideas?
Abit left field I know and I'm sure they'll be plenty of others who'll think it's a rubbish idea but how about MG ZT 260? This is the RWD one with the V8 Mustang engine. Pretty much meets all your requirements and you can pick one up for about £10k now and it'll only be 3/4 years old. I think they've done the majority of their depreciation thanks to MG going bump and most of the mechanical parts aren't MG anyway i.e. engine is Ford, brakes are BMW and AP, gearbox is Tremex. The standard car puts out 260 bhp but they can be tuned fairly easily - there's one that's putting out 600bhp and 400bhp isn't unusual.

There's an active owners register (http://www.two-sixties.com/main.htm) that have ironed out the niggly little problems it has like the climate control that seems to have only two settings - Freezing or off.

They've bags of torque, very unassuming to look at and love going sideways smile

renault alpine, porsche 928s4...dont think you got any manual xjs unless they were very early pre he 4 speeders???...if it was me, and this is a very un ph view and the car fits NONE of your criteria, id have a renault avantime..instant classic, incredibly rare and in v6 form should be reliable with the nissan oily bits....
