Its the resin that burns not the carbon, you end up with a powdery pile of burnt carbon matting.

when I was at LM one year they brought a mac f1 that had caught fire once. it was really wierd. the resin had burnt out but the carbon fibre was still in place. it was as if someone had knitted a mac f1. you could press the fibres and they just bounced back into shape...
