205 gti was definately the best of them all. Not that im biased being on my 3rd. But what a great era for hot hatches the 80's was. Good times.
Hmmm, i keep looking at 205 GTI's for a cheap hooner, will a sub £1k car be a bag of nails? What's the best engine? and what goes wrong?
And finally: Are they all that their cracked up to be? I've never driven one so ingnore my ignorance.
Cheers for your input chaps.
Excellent work with the pictures guys - knew I could rely on you lot to get to it on the pics front.
Shame the GTI AX was never as good as the GT it replaced.
Morningside, Lusifer and Swerni -
TURBO's, the Eighties and cars that weighed nothing - yes.
Soon followed by which was another car that wanted to kill you even more than the AX did..

...Yes thats the Xr3 ...
Ah yes, the venerable Essex wagon. How could I have not thought of that!? - Well in all honesty it is because I must be one of the few people on here who has yet to experience any particularly interesting Fords bar the XR4x4. I must fix this and have a play in a XR3i / RS some time..matt uk said:
...stuff about Citroens...
Bang on, both the Visa and the AX were great little cars with fantastic nimble handling. The 8v engine was a screamer too I recall. Did they ever do a 16v Visa? I half think they might of - although it may be that I have seen one with an engine conversion.. Shame the GTI AX was never as good as the GT it replaced.

Would have to be the 16v Astra GTE for me!
I started driving in a Mk2 1.2 Merit Astra, think it goes wthout saying that I lusted after a GTE or even an SRi for a long time, even now I still think one might be worth a punt!Le Mans Visitor said:

Great car, nut ultimatley out of the reach of many then and still today. Both the Intergrale and the Quattro's..Tyre_Tread said:
How about the fastest of all posted so far (it was when I started to type this post):...Gtti...
Again, not a car I've had the pleasure of. but I can imagine they are a hoot, although compare to some of the other cars here I just can't imagine it being on my drive and wanting to look at it every other minute.RossB_eg4 said:
..sexy white Civic..
Nice! The VTEC ones were great although I found that up until you get onto the second cam the standard, and cheaper, 1.6 16i was all over it. If not ahead of it.GravelBen said:
A lad in an EG Civic VTi (maybe VTiR) (with lexarse lights, big shiny wheels etc) decided to have a drag off the lights against my old '90 2.0NA Legacy wagon once....
Interesting, I can't imagine a n/a sooby doing that well. Especially as the Vti versions of the Civic had a fair bit more power than the 16i's. Wonder if it was a badged up 1.3?mat205125 said:

I dream of a mk1 astra gte with original 1.8e 8V - as far as I'm concerned Engine techology could have stopped there. You have ALL forgotten this one though!

My favourite runner up is the Citroen AX GT.
You'd be surprised at the number of car journalists who actually rate this as their favourite 80s hot hatch. James May for starters actually rated it as the only perfect car he's ever driven in a column a few months ago. I had one as my first car and absolutely loved it. The handling was utterly sublime.

Outstanding cars, I had two and loved them both.

You've all forgotten this (and I'm pretty sure it beats the Charade GTti's 1-litre record)...
The March (micra) Super Turbo...
930cc, turbocharged, supercharged, 770kg, 110 bhp!

The March Micra: I knew nothing about until now - Google was my friend.
Other info is fairly scarce but it was a rally homologation special so a limited edition and not factory standard.
In any case it appears to have an identical 0-60 time of 7.7 secs but the charade has a higher top speed of 116 vs 112 for the March Micra
The standing quarter for the Micra is a couple of tenths slower as a result.
GTti retains its crown as the fastest production 1 litre car ever produced (Very tuneable too - some have been tweaked to almost 200bhp)

Well, I went against the flow back then.
Not many people have even heard of them...
I had a mate who was a fan of 'different' hot hatches back in the day - he had a Visa GTI, & a Renault 9 Turbo (not a hatch but similar kind of thing) & then a Mazda 323 4x4 Turbo. Oh, & a Renault 5 Gordini Turbo (pre dated the 5GT Turbo). Not many people have even heard of them...

Non-turbo was the Gordini G5, wasn't it? Test-drove one when i was 17 with a friend. Drove out into the sussex countryside, found a farmhouse down single-track roads. The car was in a barn. The woman just gave me the keys and said 'take it for a drive if you like'.We ragged the tits out of it. It was fantastic fun. He agreed to buy it and then rang back to cancel, scared about french cars and rust (and it did have some...not terminal, but a year or two of life at best remaining). It was only about £600 though. I had such a go at him. Ten years later and he admitted he wished he'd got it. He ended up with some dull Fiesta.
Matt - do some work.

Why is it always that fricking golf that gets shown in reviews and TV features when a Mk1 is called for. Surely there must be enough genuine standard golfs about without having to show that car with its wrong wheels in the wrong colour, and that god-awful aftermarket bodykit. This isn't a rant at the OP, rather an observation. I'm betting that it belongs to the cheif anorak of the golf owners club or something.
THIS is what a Mk1 golf should be (even if it is a later 1.8 campaign - waits to be corrected )
The black one is nearly right, the wheel's have been refurbished though, with out the black inserts...
Shameless plug, but here is my campaign edition, she is for sale too
