I think it is a shame that the GTI is being compared directly with the Focus RS and the Renault R26.R. The GTI for VW at least since the MK4 has only been an intermediary trim level, with the R32 being the range-topping model like fords focus RS or renaults R26.R or Astras VXR's.
IMO the R20T will most likely be the successor to the R32. With the nature of increasingly environmentally conscious businesses, it kind of makes sense to continue to use homologations of either the 2.0TFSI or 2.0TSI since R32 power can be achieved with less cylinders, less emissions and less fuel consumption than previous years. Even saying that, a MK6 Golf R36 would be very tasty indeed and offer far more tunability, however highly unlikely unless you were to fork out about 15 large ones to a tuning company to do the conversion for you :P

It's very expensive - the one I specced on the VW site came to £26k with the spec I'd want.But if you look at what else £26k buys you brand new, it doesn't look too bad.
£26k only buys you a (very) low spec 320d for example...

Remember when you could get a 200hp Honda Type-R for 16k, and now here we are with a 200hp VW for 24k, high price for refinement there.
I dont think you can compare this to an RS or R26R - totaly different cars.
The GTI has that classy, well made and fast appeal about it that a putrid green car or ones with plastic windows can only aspire to.
I mean i love the RS and admire the hardcore nature of the R26 but they are not similar vehilces, compare the fully kitted new Megane cup with this and an ST and that is a fair comparison - i would have the Golf every time - OR a BMW 130i

I have a MK5 GT diesel which has a Revo upgrade and test driven the 230hp GTI version. Both excellent cars. Believe it or not, my diesel has more grunt, but the GTI lower front end weight makes it a bit sharper turning in. I also had a brilliant Mk2 8v with a high lift cam conversion and Bilstien suspension before I took delivery of the MK5. Soon after, I had to go to Carlisle (6hrs + journey) and I was glad of the MK5, but for shorter journey`s the MK2 is far better, and why? Steering feel, all modern cars have indirect steering systems, which just do not give the same feedback, no matter how good,.... and weight/size. Think how big the current Golf is compared with the original.
Now, make a proper GTI new style Polo with proper steering, and you`ll have a cracker....oh, sounds rather a lot like the orignal Golf in spec?

I don't know what you drive but I can guarantee that no matter what it is I could run rings round you in my 1990 Golf (I am cheating on the power front though) and have a stload more fun that you in your "new car". Or are all these people driving 1973 911s and Lamborghini
