Or to put it another way, what other estate of this size/mpg can manage 0-60mph in 8.2 sec with a top speed of 137mph?
If we ignore the RWD criterion, the Octavia vRS will better those figures.

Yes it does, although only 3hp more and 0.5 quicker at full tilt.

Being a turbo small engine it'll also drive different. Certainly a good alternative though smile

Have a look at the figures for the 407 I posted. I genuinely know sod all about how they drive but the engine is great.
I think its a PSA engine, same as you'll get in a Jaguar XJ or S type diesel or in a Discovery 3.

For me? no.

The big alloys, bonnet scoop, flared skirts and tinted glass all detract from its 'sleeper' credentials.......
Fair enough - its all factory standard, the scoop is needed for the intercooler etc. Go for the 3.0 H6 Legacy to avoid the scoop, thought its a bit slower.
I'd go for a newer legacy 3.0L spec B

That's a lot of car for the cash.

Funny story about the seller's Mrs. Mine won't drive my "family" car either!

Quote I recently heard from a VR4 owner: "17mpg is easier to achieve than 22" wink

My 280bhp Legacy averages around 26-27mpg and 30-33 is easy to do while making good progress on a run, and offers the same level of performance as a manual VR4 - same power, slightly less torque but 100kg less weight as well.

ETA: Sleepy looking enough for you?

My auto VR4 is averaging 22mpg at the moment, even got 34mpg out of it aswell, depends how you drive it, worst I ever got was 12mpg

How about a V50 T5 instead?

Most reviews normally prise it on its looks, driving dynamics and abilities.

I think it looks good, esp in sport trim. What don't you like about it? smile

Not so good on fuel? No idea what the AWD system is like on the S40/V50 either.

Wallet-puckering fuel economy though. Mine's not the SpecB (it's the 3.0Rn) but the difference is really only the suspension anyway, and even though I drive mine hard, 22mpg translates to frequent visits to the petrol pumps.

Still, what the hell else should I spend my money on? I don't smoke, rarely drink and have little interest in anything other than cars. Fuel economy is for "other people".

You are not wrong (parkers claims 23 mgp combined). Makes the 3l engine in my BMW530i look positively parsimonious.

I am pretty sure it is, get an XJ or S type for anywhere near the money of a good 407 and you will be doing well.

But of course being French it will break. If I was in the market for a sub £15k GT type car I think a near new 2.7hdi coupe could be the bargain of the century.

Damn beat me to it!

You could also get it with the GTR bodykit!

But like he said not a sleeper, but nor are many sporty V8 estates in my opinion

A vote for the Saab 9-5 Aero, I'm on my 2nd now and just couldn't find anything to match it in the price range I was looking at. 260bhp and can be tuned a lot more, not the best at corners but for comfort and pace takes a lot (well a lot more money) to better

sorry to be boring away from the jap estates, but what about a laguna 2 "facelift", in GT guise?

175bhp diesel / 205 bhp petrol. lots and lots of space and kit, not to mention high-ish mpg. from memory, performance is between 7s and 8s for "that" benchmark.

something like this...

...but, from experience, choose carefully...
