Spyker will surely scale down Saab and turn them into a niche premium market player. Pitch them against BMWs, Mercs and Jags but not aiming to sell anywhere near as many - that would then afford them to make marmite cars once again, which as enthusiasts is what we want.
Interesting cars will never sell big enough volumes for mass market companies, so this is the only way to do it. It's a shame for those staff who will inevitably be culled, but at least the company will survive (for now).

Saab are already a niche player. The likelihood is that they will need a new platform sharing arrangement after their agreement with GM runs out.
But certainly Saab's history of innovation in powertrain design does bode well for the future. I wonder if an agreement with Proton/Lotus would work out...?

Well I hope the build quality improves, my wifes SAAB 93 Convertible rattles and shows wear on the trim far beyound its 53K miles. Good luck to them.
Somebody commented RWD ...... Saab is famous for FWD way before it was fashionable or a cost issue, and given the recent snow FWD is far better than RWD, my RWD BM went no where!

Signature SAAB cars were: 96, 90 and 900.
Both had a typical and specific audience back in the days. Now they are bought and used - fantastic and practical daily drivers - by both male and female enthusiasts that have a soft spot for butch hacks. I like it that - unlike Volvo - the safety features are part of the design and not too obvious.
I see an audience, worldwide but still niche.

had 6 SAABs in a row, my favorite being a 900T (that was far from standard) caught doing over 240km/h outback Aus in it, suggested that his speed gun was fauty he agreed, put it away and drove off!
Worst a 9-5,put itself in reverse on the freeway at 100Km/h, then accelerated when the brake was pressed, SAAB/GM took the car to check it over but could not fix or find the fault because it was too dangerous to drive, delivered it back to me in that state- I PX'd it the next day, it was still a new car in the dealers eyes.
Good Riddance GM- you screwed them over well in your time.It would be nice to see something that gives as mich fun and reliabilty as my old 900T!

Really nice to see SAAB back in the game and as others have said with those CRAZY DUTCH GUYS SPYKER!! They should if nothing else be far more original designs than SAAB were sadly turning out at the end. They were mind numbingly bland, my only fear is have they bitten off more than they can chew?? Hope not for both companies.
Great news. And one in the eye for the cynics who had written Saab off. I always thought that comparisons to Rover were nonsense, because Saab is a global brand with a big legacy of good will around it. There are plenty of them in the US too.
I gather they are bringing out the 9 4 - a kind of Honda CRV/Freelander competitor. I hope so . I would buy one of those.

You know, it might just work, say Saab produce a quality, economical, discrete yet quietly classy vehicle that is right for the time they might pull it off, surely peoples tastes may swing from dirty great flash, ugly and fairly wasteful off roaders and thrusty saloons to something a bit more friendly yet still capable type of vehicle.

I think a lot of people buy Audi's and BMW's but want a Saab, trouble is the 9-3 just isnt good enough, I have one and really it looks like a Saab doing its best stab at being thrusty, it is a good looking car but not a Saab,its a Vectra doing and impression of a Saab doing an impression of a BMW.
At the moment, a lot of the german stuff has a kind of 80's excess about it and is starting to grate and seem out of pace with the times, led lights, shiny bits, spoliers, bulging arches, big wheels, black leather, liquorice profile tyres, general bigness has skewed what actual premium and luxury is into uncomfortable bling and showiness, I hope Saab go their own way and meet a sea change in purchasing habits coming the other way.

I think the days men - especially men - cared about what car to drive are over. I mean: SAAB goes electric in 2014 folks!
The pics posted show days that will never come back. TVR was one of the last cars that tried to be 80s . . . in the new millenium. And how they failed. Not much chance for that in 2010.
