Alfa marketted the 4C extremely well though, Lotus made a pigs ear of launching the Evora.

The general motoring public wentdaft when the new shape Cayman launched. Even non motoring people were talking about it. Its all just clever marketing

But if I wanted something bigger and "more grown up", I'd have bought a Porsche. Or a Z4 or an SLK. That market is well served.
Not that big, the 4C for instance is little wider and longer than an Elise and has a dashboard, seats and not paddings, a centre consol etc.

It's a bit more substantial.
The 4C is much larger than the Elise. It's wider than a Cayman, Z4 or SLK.

How do any of the features you cite make it drive better?

It's also a damn fine car, having an exceptional product makes marketing a lot easier

Not quite, Alfa could have done it lot better. Especially the US launch..

It isn't.......

Those features, as you've probably read, make it a bit more car. And not a cramped go-cart on steroids.

And the cf tub does the rest, lowering the weight to Elise spec.

A year or so ago the specialist press and even national dailies were full of Lotus' grand plans for a range of high performance cars. There's an awful lot more to the success of any car than 'just clever marketing', as any good marketeer would tell you.

Its noticably wider than an Elise, to say it isn't is a very bizzare form of denial! Plus every single road test I have read comments on its width.

Elise (2011 Model)
Length: 3824 mm / 150.6 in

Width: 1719 mm / 67.7 in

Height: 1117 mm / 44 in

Wheelbase: 2300 mm / 90.6 in

Weight 876kg

4C
Length 3989 mm / 157 in

width 1864 mm / 73.4 in

Height: 1183 mm / 46.6 in

Wheelbase: 2380 mm / 93.7 in

Weight 920kg's

So 4c is 5% approx heavier than the Elise, is 7 inches longer, 6 inches wider, 2 and a half inches higher yet you say its not bigger?

As far as driving goes, as I said before, width makes a big difference anywhere other than on the Mway or an A road.

Well yes, actually making the product helps.

Are we take it you've enjoyed an extensive test drive?

Ill be honest I haven't driven a new cayman, I do own an older one though, are you saying that all the 5 star reviews are wrong?

I haven't seen or read a bad review of any Cayman, as much as it seems to pain the people on here who seem to hate anything Porsche the Cayman IS a damn fine car.

It's not an either or situation you know, the Lotus and the Porsche can both be good cars, they aren't mutually exclusive.

I think it's reasonable to assume that the Cayman is a very good car from the reviews because they've been consistently positive (albeit not without criticism).

However, the 4C's reviews have been mixed at best. Every group test I've seen comparing it to either the Exige or the Cayman has come to the conclusion that as a drivers car the 4C is out-classed by both. A number of reviews have also said that it's a worse motorway cruiser than the Exige, which is shocking if true.

The 4C may be great, I haven't driven it, but concluding that it's great from the reviews seems very odd.

Of course the ironic thing there is that Lotus would probably come up with something about as good as that. Witness the famous Elise 'jock strap' cup holder solution...

That cup holder is sort of ok ish at a push. Reminds me a bit of this

Actually, come to think of it, what exactly is the point of weight saving by removing a few grams worth of plastic handles and leaving electric windows in?

Well if its a Cayman (could be same on 911 as well) the windows have to be electric as they automatically drop when you open the door and raise when you shut it as the windows are frameless.

the fabric handles are naff though.

It's ok back in the late 1960's my uncle had a bit of string too - to open the doors on his mini smile

TBH I can see the point on a race car where everything else is removed.

Mind you for a fabric strap it looks well engineered apart from the visible torx screw

Is it wrong that I really want the umbrella for the umbrella holder... I've never needed an umbrella. Certainly not one that costs £60 because it's got a Porsche logo on it. But because I have an umbrella pocket, I feel it should have one in there. *shakes fist* damn you Porsche, you know my OCD can't hold out!

EDIT: I have a pen I never use in the pen holder also...
Are you telling me I've got an umbrella holder in my car? Where is it?
That coin tray in the passenger side... Actually a channel for a Porsche umbrella!

Lotus would never have thought of that! They didn't even think to make the glove box big enough for the handbook on the Evora.

Oh well, no time to read, I prefer driving - took me bloody ages to change the clock at the start of BST though........

Electric windows are, I understand, actually a wee bit lighter than manual ones...
