That said, it's always worth investing in decent brakes. I find Mintex 1144's to be a very good balance between performance and wear, not badly priced either.

I'm more BMW then MB as a rule, but find myself quite drawn to CLs...
...except why do MB insist on making them strict 4 seaters? It just instantly rules them out.
What does it rule them out for? It was never intended as a large family saloon: that's what they make the 4-door S-Class for...except why do MB insist on making them strict 4 seaters? It just instantly rules them out.

I do agree that modern cars are more servo'd, but swapping between modern cars and our older cars, I also think that the absolute capability is lacking.
It only really worries me when I'm on a busy motorway and suspect the Mondeo in front can stop quicker than I can. I mitigate by leaving longer distances, but I think it does limit the higher speed capability of the car.
I had to slam my brakes on about a month ago and in that instance the performance was good enough, fortunately!
Your suggestions on upgrades are very interesting indeed. I shall investigate!
Are you referring to the SL? Only ask because mine has astonishingly good brake performance for such a heavy car. You have to give them a good prod but it really has decent stopping power even at autobahn speeds. It only really worries me when I'm on a busy motorway and suspect the Mondeo in front can stop quicker than I can. Tyres (unless your talking racing) are as important for stopping as brakes, with good rubber old cars are fine in modern traffic, if the car doesn't have ABS you just have to learn how to avoid locking the wheels up. I've only over heated my brakes once and that was in a tired Porsche 924 (drums on the rear) chasing a mk5 Gold GTI over a mountain road, the peddle went soft so I slowed down.

Good point, I just assumed Oa would have good tyres, my SL performs brilliantly on Goodyear F1s. Best upgrade I've made to the car really if not the most cost effective (that was the steering damper at 22 euros)W00DY said:

The Porsche I love to hate but I had the chance to take a then new Cayenne S (2007 vintage) round Assen and I was faster and smoother in that than I was in my DSG Golf GTi that I owned that the time. The Cayenne is a fecking ugly car but really very capable.

That does look nice...they've put about £54,000 in fuel into it, but depreciated much more presumably. In total less than £1 per mile by my shonky man maths.W00DY said:

Looks like a nce car and strangely I find myself accepting of the period accessories.
Terrible ad and pictures, but a 66k mile 4.2 A8 is pretty rare. I quite like these simple looking early ones as well. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-A8-4-2-66-000-miles...
