Yes. And the plate needs to be transferable as some aren't. A famous case is that of '1 AN' which resides on a Morris Minor and always will.
OK.

For those that can be transferred, what if you get a sh!tter with a great plate MOT'd by a friendly tester who will accept you will scrap the donor once the plate is yours? hehe

How can certain plates not be transferable?
1). If the paperwork wasn't done in the 70s or whenever the logbooks were changed.
2). If the plate was allocated after the original was transferred off. This prevents you getting an old car and just continually selling each dateless number allocated to it.

Most garages won't do a dodgy MOT as they are liable to a spot checks. The DVLA are hot on cars with nice plates suddenly coming back to life and it will be flagged on their computer system.

It wasn't in Taffland, but I saw 8 OYO today, and it was correctly spaced (unless it was 80 YO, in which case it wasn't).

There is a process to get a good plate 'reactivated' by having the car inspected, producing other evidence like old photos or log books etc - pretty strict hurdle and if agreed the plate becomes non transferable.

In this case, the plate and car were together when the records were computerised, so no issues if someone wants to undertake the renovation.

This one is well know in Triumph Circles, the car has a bit of a story behind it too
Top Spot, Jonsey! Still showing as on this car. Not sure how many people would want the plate; a 1 x 3 would normally make the car worth restoring just to transfer, but in this case I'm not too sure...
Correct me if I am wrong but can a plate only be transferred/retained from a vehicle with an up to date MOT?
The Triumph Herald has now been restored and the car is back on the road.
