Never has anal-retentiveness been so fascinating.

Worth half an hour of your lunch break.

Not bad at all, but a cruiser is exactly what they are. They are not a B road thriller. Enjoy instead the thrust (in 500 form at least), the build quality and robustness (as good as they say they are) and the general air of classiness and wellbeing that any Merc born in the 80's brings to the table. The beards say the pre facelift cars are simpler and more reliable, and to my eyes looks at it's sharpest with the early 15 holes, 2 tone Saccos and gingers.

I had my 500SL in my mid 20's but was too young for it. I wrongly expected some sportiness and tail slidey stuff to match the thrust, and had no internet to tell me otherwise. Now I'm suitably distinguished, it would suit me far better and I really quite fancy another.
I do really like them, I always wanted a 300SL-24 pre facelift in that two tone silver/grey colour scheme, although I know now the 5/600 is the one to go for.

I think I just like the 300SL-24 badge as a youngster hehe

It was also an absolute screamer of an engine! 7000 rpm red line was the same as BMW's S38 motor of the same period. Shame the 4-spd auto wasn't quite so enthusiastic to head-but the horizon, though.

I can still vividly recall the howl that 300-24 donkey made after 5000 rpm cloud9

I have a mate with a 1990 560 SEC, and he works on the door of a late-night bar at the weekends - it's not called the Double Deuces though! biggrin
