No. I had a million Mondeos as snotters. A barge needs a sense of ocassion.

In a proper barge you can turn up anywhere and park out front.
We need some hard and fast rules here -

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2006-Ford-Mondeo-3-0-V6-...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-54-MERCEDES-E320-CD...

So one is, one isn't?

No! 100k for shocks. At least.

To be honest, I find the Ford more interesting. But really I would rather not park either of them out front of anywhere.

This thread is not susceptible to rules. If it has a guiding philosophy, it is probably contrariness.

Interesting - the suspension definitely isn't as compliant as it was 40k ago when I replaced everything. I am starting to note this on broken surfaces or imperfections that straddle the road (expansion joints and so on).

I'd certainly agree with this - we're inclusive and all the better for it.

Can a barge be a poverty spec 25 year old merc 190 - yes! Can it be a convertible - definitely!

I was of the understanding barges were about road presence, toys, low mpg and a comfortable place for your posterior. I'm lost now.

The term has to be flexible.

Lots of barges have fairly economical diesel engines.

Hi, I'm in the process of searching for a car and now that I have the funds the car is eluding me, as is typical.

I'm looking out for a s211 in 280, 350, or possibly 500 form. Petrol obviously. Needs to be an estate and preferably under max thread budget. Apart from ebay, autotrader, gumtree and obviously here, is anywhere else I should be looking?

There are a couple that are close to what we're looking for but not quite right, (silver or black with black leather)

Also does anyone on here know how to find out if the sbc pump was replaced by merc from the reg no.?

Any help would be appreciated as the money is burning a hole in my pocket and my current s210 is literally rusting before my eyes.

Cheers

Yeah, well, that's the golden rule of life, really, isn't it? No money and there's everything at bargain prices. Pockets full of money and there's nothing to buy. Harrumph.

Anyway, have you seen this one? We had it about a month ago. It's priced just over budget but it's obviously not going anywhere. Spec is a bit basic and it is up north (like all good things in life). But 388bhp in a green E-Class estate is pretty tempting.

All of those things and none of those things and many other things besides. You have to feel barge: you can't think barge.

Perhaps barge is unappreciated (hence cheap) quality? That quality can manifest itself in a big engine, luxurious appointments, character, versatility, design integrity, or just sheer bloody-minded different-ness.

I rather like this a8 4.2 http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

The W124 has been put in for a service with a list of annoying things to fix. The driver's side window isn't working again - the regulator was replaced last time. Is there some "trick" to get it to work well over a long period? Also it has been 2 years/40k since I did the shocks - worth doing again?
I'm in one of those albeit the previous gen but with the 4.2... if the later models are anything like mine, don't bother, the list to fix will grow every time you take it in. On the 4.2 I've had:

Replacement head gaskets
Replacement cooling fan clutch
Rebuilt gearbox
Rebuilt engine top end
Rebuilt rear diff

Previous to this I had a 2000 735i, 2002 745i, 2003 745i and a 2005 745i and none of them let me down in the way this A8 has, it'll be my last foray into Audi barges, next stop, truck barge, loaded F150 crew-cab with the V8.

Unfortunately I can't get that colour past the mrs, otherwise it wouldn't still be for sale, although it is slightly lacking in spec, but not in engine.

It's probably closer than most to me as most seem to be down south, but I am prepared to travel for the right car.

Unless, of course, you do 40,000 miles a year and need diesel estate, in which case just wait 5 more minutes and someone'll be along to point you at an E-Class estate with a AGA.

Welcome aboard.

It's only about 20k a year so I can stomach high 20s average, looked at the E classes test driven a couple, got fed up with rusty wings, ridiculous asking prices for estates and the surprisingly high bork factor. That XJ looks the ticket bar the mid teens MPG and the fact I can't afford to buy it.

Cat D and strange advert but could do the trick.

Or something like this with an excellent MoT history.

Why no 320 on the list? Is pre facelift unpalatable?

A 320 would be fine although post facelift would be better.

We've called about a couple that have been up for ages, one above thread budget but the dealers have been unwilling to move on price.

Price-wise, the vendor of this is plainly high on drugs, but I can't help but like this little sleeper. Right up our street, surely? First, it's a Merc; second, it has a grandpa paint job; third, it has a thumping big straight six petrol; fourth, it has leather upholstery in an "interesting" hue; fifth, wheel trims! What not to like?
