If you wanted a lot of bang for your buck you wouldn't buy a golf you would buy an ariel atom or something of that sort would you not.
that's an extreme example, you can have better 'bang for buck' whilst retaining 4 seats and boot space.jimjim150 said:

as said, there was an E46 M3 on PH last week for £5k and 185k miles. why would you buy a brand new kia or something when you could have that?!
Obvious answer? Running costs.

Not really fair on poor old VW to compare their brand new gti to second hand cars, otherwise may as well say no point buying a brand new Golf when you can buy a second hand Golf and before you know it VW would be out of business and everyone would be driving around in Evo Xs and STIs...

that's an extreme example, you can have better 'bang for buck' whilst retaining 4 seats and boot space.So, a Golf GTi, that weighs and costs more than 4 times the original (roughly);
the Germans call it progress, or 'Vorsprung Durch Technic"
I call it "car getting to heavy, and expensive whilst trying to trade on the 'Golf' name, like some fading film star looking back to her halcyon days"
The only thing of interest is the winter tyres, and as my wife has Conti winter tyres on her A4 quattro Avant TDi, its no interest at all to me.
The Golf is in danger of becoming an irrelevance, or is it just a cynical move by VW to move the Golf up a sector in price and size to allow even more models below it???

they do seem to be killing the great golf- ive had a mark 2 gti, mark 3 vr6 and tdi, a g60, mark4 v5 turbo and gti and then mark 5 tdi. They all just seem to get boring and the cost of this new compared with others is nuts!!! got me a new 11 model year sti with power upgrade to 320 bhp and sat nav for £32500. has same interior space for passenger and boot space as the golf. plus as stated befroe it destroys it in every aspect(with possible exception of mpg) im getting 28 to the gallon which cant be bad?

Can you really have a "Hot-Hatch" with an automatic / semi-automatic box? Surely they are the last bastion of fully involved gear changes?
I have the DSG in my Polo GTI, and I think that it's way more fun than a manual, but I do use the paddles the majority of the time.This video sums it up nicely for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRwfvnDt7BA
Bit concerned about the number of people who don't like the look of the wheels and presumably would prefer 18" rims with rubber band tyres. Despite that ruining the handling and ride of so many cars and being a pure vanity option.
Lots of people on other threads are starting to discover that a slightly smaller rim and deeper tyre wall makes much more sense for a road car when they try a set of winters on smaller rims.

This comment is even more ridiculous than the 2nd hand bks being trotted out! the Germans call it progress, or 'Vorsprung Durch Technic"

How many cars can you name that have retained similar weight and price after 6 versions and 35 years of production?

I agree you'll sacrifice running costs, warranty length/existence as you cycle through more and more powerful cars, but this is Pistonheads after all and people are bound to criticize boring car decisions.
me? I wouldn't buy a new Kia EVER and if I was in the market for something to cart a family around in for 5k i'd get a Focus ST ( http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3487708.htm ) or something.
There's not many Kia owners on here you might have noticed too whereas there's plenty of cars which have been bought for <=£5k, it's just not a petrolheads car.

so then it isn't just about BFB... otherwise why would you care about number of seats or boot space. Can't reduce everything down to one factor, which is why there are so many different new cars on sale, and why used cars are worth every amount between zero and loads. Very few of us can really and truly buy the fastest or coolest thing possible for whatever our budget is.
Well, it can be still about BFB within the frame of a new performance orientated 4 seater car priced at 31k...People don't get the wildest car possible for many reasons, IMO I think brand loyalty comes into it far too much!
What a predictable thread.
Given that the original Golf GTI went on sale for £6499 in 1977 if you adjust the figure for inflation that is approximately £25k in today's terms and the new Edition 35 starts from £27,525 (RRP OTR) it isn't the huge mark up that people are describing.
If you take into account that eg Renaultsport 250 costs £25020.00 (RRP OTR) and a a BMW 135i coupe £31,340 (OTR) I really don't see why people are getting so hung up on the price.

Regarding the comments about what else could be bought for the same price, can anybody tell me what percentage of new cars bought are company cars, I believe it's around 50%?
Now can anybody take a stab at how many company car drivers considering this Golf will be choosing a 2nd hand RS4/M3 instead, or a new evo or an sti?
I don't dispute that for some people on here they have a greater choice of where to stick their £30k but for half of the new car 'buying' demographic, the options you describe just aren't options at all.

I'd like to see a real worldy running costs comparison with the Evo X/STI/135i. Things like servicing, parts, insurance, average fuel consumption, depreciation.
Hmmm...don't What Car do that sort of thing?
EDIT:
According to the beige turd that is What Car;
Well both the Impreza and Evo X feel cheap.
'... the Evo being pricey to run, with a frightening thirst for fuel, while the ride is punishing'. BMW 1 gets an average 3/5.
They seem to cream themselves over the Golf though. The VW gives everyone at What Car a permanent chub.
So there you go, Golf wins. Golf R wins even more.
