Hybrids - its a tax thing not an mpg thing isn't it?

Tell the majority of the nice people that are not working to such narrow criteria, or have £22K, why they should buy one.........
What, exactly, is your problem with hybrids? All you seem to do is refuse to answer direct questions and waffle on about everyone else mentioning criteria this and that. You then seem to just start posting stuff of no relevance.

Be careful - you'll be getting RSI from all that ducking. You're remarkably free with opinion, somewhat less free with substantiation.
Lead the way, stop firing out demands and give some substantial justification why the majority of buyers in the market for an economical Focus sized car should pay £22K for a Prius when £16K options exist.
Over to you.......

Fortunately, I'm wise enough not to get into your narrow buying criteria type argument when the bigger picture is actually more relevant.

Prius is bigger than a Focus.Over to you.......
Can you get a petrol engined automatic Focus (bearing in mind the Prius is bigger) that does 60+mpg on a mainly urban route?
If you can how much does it cost to get the same spec as the Prius?
And I can't be bothered to look it up as you must know.
So, the answer is.......?
No Matt, you ran me to ground. There's no justification whatsoever. All those people buying a Prius are wrong.
I humbly withdraw and bow to your greater reason.
Oh now wait a minute. You haven't actually given a single scintilla of evidence, unlike me and a number of people on this and other threads, in terms of why we have chosen what we have.
Might I humbly suggest you put up or shut up - and please don't come back with "buy a cheaper car". We all know that's an option many people choose, and good on them, it's absolutely their choice, and I don't seek to denigrate that in any way.
You assert that hybrid technology carries an unnecessary price premium. The only way to validate that is via a like-for-like comparison of vehicles.
So, crack on, compare away.

Anyway as you ask, Ford/Kia do a similar spec petrol auto Focus/i30 at about £17k (before discount..)
£5K is a big saving. Not recouped by better mpg for a huge majority.
For someone that does 10,000 miles a year, the difference between 65 mpg and 40 mpg is only £600 per year.
Wake up to some realities please.

But how few people do as little as 10,000 miles a year?Anyway as you ask, Ford/Kia do a similar spec petrol auto Focus/i30 at about £17k (before discount..)

Having just shown why the majority of buyers don't pay £22K for a petrol auto when they can get one for circa £17K and SAVE money, if you then start to look at manuals, there is even less of a case for the majority.I humbly withdraw and bow to your greater reason.

No need for the figures for a manual Focus ECOnetic, VED A, equivalent on purchase price and running costs. No comparison. Big win for the Ford.

I've just answered it. Read my post above. Just for your info I don't like manual cars for my urban commute.

Which one of those random cars is the same size and spec as the Prius and is available is a petrol auto that can achieve real world 60+mpg in a mainly urban commute?
And how much is it?

Your words. That's a comparison is it?
Come back later with a proper comparison.
Remember, it's you doing the assertion, not me.
Quack.

I suggest you get out there and start by looking at stuff like the Hyundai website for kit like the i30 120 bhp auto Active (very nice spec). £17K.
You can have a world of even more cheap Prius equivalent fun with non auto's.
It really is why you don't see many Prius on the UK roads.

Does it also have to be Japanese and the name starts with a T? Which one of those random cars is the same size and spec as the Prius and is available is a petrol auto that can achieve real world 60+mpg in a mainly urban commute?

A bit small and slow and it would cost me £1500 a year more in petrol alone to run. Nice enough car though. Why then do I see far more Prius on the road than i30s? Come to think of it why do I see so many Prius taxis? Are all minicab firms embarked on some misguided green quest? Or maybe they recognise a reliable, extremely cheap to run car when they see it?I suggest you get out there and start by looking at stuff like the Hyundai website for kit like the i30 120 bhp auto Active (very nice spec). £17K.

If we extend your logic are you expecting Dacia to be the only mass market brand in existence in a couple of years time?
