Not finding love with my RS6
Discussion
It is looking more and more like a family family estate for the daily and something small with a decent power to weight might be the order of the day.
I've never been in a caterham/westfield/lotus so would have to give one a go and see how I felt with it. Ideally I'd like a 2+2 seater so my daughter and wife can head out in the fun car too as my daughter LOVES it when I mash the throttle in the RS6 but as far as I can tell theres only 911's, gtr and erm, not sure what else that'll fit more than two!

When I swapped my daily and weekend car for a E92 M3 hoping that it would be a do it all car it just failed miserably at it and I appreciate the M3 would be like a milk float when compared to the RS6 with 700 bhp too.German stuff just seems to manage to totally displace the driver when it comes to fun and you have to be driving like an absolute nipple to gain any thrills from them, when I had a go in a caterham I just loved it as it was all about the driving and feel of the car.
Sadly all cars are a compromise but I do think a two car set up as in a comfy daily and an exciting weekender seems to hit the spot nicely I reckon.

From your garage history, you've never owned a sports car. You need to. I've never been in a caterham/westfield/lotus so would have to give one a go and see how I felt with it. For something with space and that makes the family giggle, get a 2006/07 Merc E63 estate, and then an Elise for weekend fun - any one you like the look of, because they'll all be fun on driving roads (or indeed the occasional drive to work).

No sweeping generalisations there then.As for your personal preferences, sales figures show that very few people want to go out on modern roads in 60-year old trackday special. But if it suits you, that's fine.

I still think German cars are competent but dull.

Pretty much every modern car, and most others are bland after driving these '60 year old trackday specials' If you are actually interested in driving there is not a purer experience, all be it one that comes from compromising on cup holders and stereo options. To write a Caterham (or se7en) off as solely a track car is daft, there are so many variants to choose, from a bit of fun....As for your personal preferences, sales figures show that very few people want to go out on modern roads in 60-year old trackday special. ...to something more extreme.
PH is a strange place at the moment. Diesels, sales figures, economy, EV's, practicalities.....

I sold my M6 as it was too heavy and thirsty and not enough real fun.
Sell it and buy something sensible and something mad.
I bought a VW CC and a cosworth turbo Westfield for a little bit more than £25k but you could buy similar
This is good advice. Sell it and buy something sensible and something mad.

If you like your little 147 why not go down the route of getting a 147 GTA or 156 GTA SW? In particular the SW should be the best bet as they are rare and getting rarer in RHD. IIRC there were only ever something like 125 RHD 156 GTA SW.
You could even take it and get the 3.7 conversion done. It should hold its value quite well if not go up in value. Differing variants go up to around 10-11k for really good condition ones.

I like your thinking there Jimmybob
I do like the look of the 147 GTA just wish it had the later front end like our other two have, makes the car look miles better

I just bought a £7500 s1 Elise and am going to flog the m3 and put some of the cash towards a 4x4 of some sort for all the practical duties.
If I get my ass dragged back local to you, I'll flog you an oil burning Cayenne.... QuattroDave said:
I was doing Bursledon to City Centre, now it's Bursledon to Hedge end!
I live in Bursledon, if you need convincing one way or the other about the merits of using an Evo, I can give you a run out in an Evo 8/9 hybrid with about 400 brake? It's not an estate, but I gather they feel exactly the same. You've cheered me up with your tales of mpg, high teens seems eminently reasonable now!
Really interested to see how this pans out.
The one thing that does stand out to me, is that you need to start test driving other cars. a GT-R will probably alter your appreciation of what's quick and what's a supercar.
However, there are a lot of other cars out there within the sector - get some new miles under your belt and see what you bond with.

Ahhhhh, but which cars! The one thing that does stand out to me, is that you need to start test driving other cars. a GT-R will probably alter your appreciation of what's quick and what's a supercar.

Do I go the two car route and get something like a 5 series diseasle for my daily and something fruity for the weekend or aim for something with a few less cylinders and a lot less pork for another stab at an all in one car.
I was tempted by the 3.0 tfsi audi lump in either the A6 or S4 as a fast when it wants to be (revo tuned) yet circa 50% better on mpg but wasn't sure about the noise which given the RS6 only makes a good enough noise to hear in the cabin (it's that well sound insulated!) when it's angry makes me think perhaps getting a car that's a nice place to be AND sound good is possibly a bit of an oxymoron.
So I welcome recommendations for alternatives to get out and try. I'm not so sure on the classic route, the URq has left me wary! So anything up to about £25k!

Here is my "60 year old trackday special":
It gets driven on "modern roads" (whatever they are) and it is bloody brilliant thanks very much - a damn sight more exciting than just about any remotely "normal car".
