Looks great but I would never have guessed MG. Surely that's a bad thing if you've gone to the trouble of buying up the name and all the history that comes with it. I would expect to see hints of Midget or MGB in there.
I think that they're using this and the previous EV to widen their brand audience to be honest. I think when they first stuck the logo on the cars they very much piggy backed on the historic brand values and image and went in and smashed the skint pensioner market but that market isn't going to be around for too much longer so the EVs are also targeting the grand children etc.

I would guess that they are going after the MX5 segment while Porsche et al will be targeting the next market up?

Good looking car, but like others, I've grown very uncomfortable with buying anything Chinese now (been there - lovely people, but like a lot of the world, unfortunately governments no longer reflect the attitudes, beliefs and character of the people they represent).

So yeah, while it may be pretty much impossible to avoid Chinese made products in our every day consumer goods - choosing not to buy an entire Chinese made car is a start........ and ya have to start somewhere.

  • Incidentally, my phone is a Sony Xperia...... Made In Japan.

pretty much this ^^^

I'm aware that my Tesla is (probably) made in Shanghai - but it's an American owned company rather than a CCP one. Splitting hairs? No doubt and people are correct that you can't avoid Chinese tech and maybe it's pathetic to try... but here we are.

Hmmm it does look nice I’ll give it that but still not entirely convinced by an electric open top “sports car” with its quiet drone, point and shoot style driving experience, not exactly what a sports car is about. I get the mind-melting hyper car EV thing which is all about shock and awe but this won’t have that. Very much get the feeling this is a “swanning about” car instead.

I tried to put a deposit on one last weekend. The dealer refused
They had no details from MG, everything they knew came from Instagram.

I think the discomfort around buying Chinese stuff is valid. Yes it’s unavoidable that you’ll end up with some but if you can do less to indirectly fund the putting of Uyghurs into concentration camps that’s a good thing, even if you can’t avoid it entirely. I own a Lenovo laptop, though, so I can’t be too sanctimonious.

That said, it’s refreshing to see someone actually doing a properly new mass production sports car. The last one we got over here would be, what, the Alpine? The Lotus Emira, maybe? Looking at the figures it makes and MG’s usual prices this seems more Cayman rival than 911 and, regardless of whether it’s funding a regime out of Orwell’s worst nightmares, we badly need more of those.
This needs to be priced quite a bit under the likes of the Cayman to sell, otherwise, who would buy it?

MG are developing a habit of undercutting the market quite a bit, it's a standard Chinese strategy that works. I have a feeling this may be cheaper than people expect and it will need to be to appeal to the current MG customer or to drag people away from other sports car brands.

I have to agree with that, I think it is perfect just for those that want to get the top down and waft through the countryside on a weekend "looking cool" rather than blasting point to point.

It's not to my driving style, but I can see the appeal.

Looks ok but the idea of a 2t EV sports-car doesn't appeal so it's a no from me.

I think it looks pretty good. Will certainly be interested to read/watch road tests to see how it feels to drive. If someone can make an affordable EV sports car that is genuinely fun and engaging to drive, they could be onto a winner. The Chinese are probably best placed to do it, as they can undercut everyone else, while the European manufacturers will likely have to make their own entry-level EV sports cars expensive in order for them to viable.

Doesn't that kind of make sense though? The car has only been officially unveiled this week. It's probably a bit early for dealers to be taking deposits.

I don't think anyone is saying that people shouldn't refuse to buy this for political reasons, or even that people who refuse to buy this for political reasons while still buying other Chinese manufactured cars/goods; people can boycott whatever they want with whatever justification they want. The thing which is annoying is the (to be fair relatively few) people who use it as an excuse to look down on anyone else who doesn't do the same.

I think you're being deliberately disingenuous by calling it looking down on people.

It's more about raising awareness. I'll bet the majority of people buying these MGs assume they're British and don't realise they're purchasing a car from a company owned by the Chinese state.

I think if a lot of people did realise that, then fewer of them would be bought.

Exactly this. Just look at the current demographic of MG drivers in the UK. Mostly white elderly gents. I know a guy. Staunch Brexiteer, strongly pro Britain...just bought a ZS (I know a crime in itself!!). He had no idea it was Chinese. And the dealers exploit that ignorance from what he told me.

built in the UK? Or Owned by a UK based company? Nope. Sadly not really an MG then just a badge of convenience. Why? Because this country is run by short term idiots out to put quick profit above all else so sell off everything they can. Has been that way since the 1960s TBH. Those Arianne Rockets France makes a mint from launching satelites etc? British rocket engines sold off cheap by a govt that scrapped out space programme. Just one example of the idiocy at the top and in the boardrooms of this country for decades. But still despite all that an interesting and very pretty car.
Spot on. Well said.

The charging connector has two options, the model citizen option in the usual place, and a 'needs to be re-educated' option where two large crocodile clips are used directly on the driver. Charge is applied in short high voltage bursts until the correct attitude is achieved.

Handsome I think. Interesting really as it is quite a ‘European’ looking car, and the context of a lot of accusations of st looking German cars being the fault of too much of a focus on Chinese tastes .

As I've been going through the comments, I've been thinking the same (annoying that there are a few posters that seem to be forcing their opinions on others).
Yes, the Chinese state is portrayed as untrustworthy and with dubious intentions and anything that may support it might be bad. But that's no reason for someone to try to force their values on others because that's what they believe. And less face it, that's just what is - "belief". Then again, if you've got actual evidence, I'm sure your government would love to hear from you.

In regard to the car, this is what I've been waiting for. I like 2 seater convertibles and I've come round to the idea of an EV one for my future, even though I absolutely love the sound of a nice ICE. An electric convertible will lack that aural pleasure (always important to recognise the difference between oral and aural when saying this smile), but I can also imagine the pleasure of hearing the countryside around you as you drive along almost silently apart from the wind (though that might just be a vision waiting for the road noise/tyre roar to kill it in reality).

If this can be affordable and encourage more manufacturers to create their own versions, then I'm all for it and I would prefer to buy something that supported my localised industry (UK or EU), rather than Chinese. But for the love of all that's pleasurable about car ownership, please just make the oversized and SUV hell stop.

I think you are probably over-estimating how much most consumers care. The reason that China is now the world's factory is because consumers want cheap products.

Is this the future of sports cars?

Suprised by this - I have read comments from people saying they won't consider it because MG is owned by the CCP. I think that is a fair point of view and I am happy people share it on here. I happen to agree with it. I am also happy that people share alternative points of view - e.g. that they don't care. It's all an interesting insight to the prevailing mood of the PH population.

I don't think anyone is looking down on anyone - apart from (maybe) the "ah, but you have a Chinese phone..." brigade.

Re. the car - It's great that the market for a two-seater open top SV is getting off the ground. I could imagine buying one one day...

A lot of people in here happy to overlook the fact that most of the componentry in their favourite "human rights friendly" sports car is made in exactly the same place....... let's not even get into where almost all the lithium comes from in every EV or Hybrid battery and what's that like......

Sticking to cars, I think it looks great. Weight is obviously on the high side given all the safety/tech etc but it's comparable to an SL55 I think I saw somewhere?

The only thing I'd change is the steering wheel.
