Chaps I work in Hammersmith, just arrived at the office in a rather jolly mood as to what I just saw. Waiting at the lights on Fulham Palace road, first a matte black MP4-12C went right past me. Then right behind it a Ferrari 458. Funny thing was, the Ferrari also had some Matte black parts along the bottom of the doors and at the front. The two cars were clearly together so most interesting. Mclaren testing the 12C against a 458 in rush hour traffic? In which case, what's with the altered parts on the Fezza? Did they break it earlier or are they experimenting with what can be achieved ultimately on the Ferrari? Very interesting I must say and the Mclaren looked a bit bigger than the Ferrari to my eyes.
I would say they 'borrowed' the 458 and the black masking is just there to prevent stone chips, as they're no doubt going to give it a good thrashing!Beirut Taxi said:

I'd imagine the aluminium used in the 458 is laughable compared to aerospace grade too. I think McLaren know a thing or two about making composite chassis.
There is a common misconception that aerospace is more advanced than the F1 industry. It's actually the other way round, the engineering and technology in F1 leaves aerospace in the dark ages.F1 is the most advanced engineering industry in the world. Only the cleverest minds get the chance to work for a top F1 team.
To state that the materials they use are "gash" and are somehow inferior to aerospace is laughable.
I'll state my point again, this car was designed by some of the cleverest, most successful people in the world, applying the most advanced engineering known to man.

This is equivalent to running about 450 major F1 teams! Plus many countries share aerospace technology which of course only happens illegally in F1.
Carbon Nanotubes (Evo no. 151 p117) have been in use within aerospace for a few years, but only now is being considered as viable for future use in F1. I believe there are other composites within the aerospace industry which are still [financially] out of reach of F1 teams.
