Paid £300 at 18 to insure my Nova SR (this was in 1995 though!)

Now pay £320 a year on a 4.7 Grand Cherokee Jeep,
Fully comp, no accidents or claims, no points and 10 years NCB
It would be £250 a year, but one of my named drivers doesn't have the best record and she increases it by £70

All in all I'm happy.

Can't work out insurance companies... when I bought the Boxster new I paid around £800 fully comp, full NCB, no accidents or convictions etc, I then proceeded to have 2 fault claims in the first year (not my finest hour!) and was terrified of the renewal price as I hadn't protected my NCB. Anyway, with the 2 fault claims I managed to renew fully comp with 1 yr NCB for around £700... WTF?!

Cheapest I've paid is just over £200 fully comp for a Pug 206 and about the same for the focus.

Now paying just under £500 fully comp (incl. business) for the 335i, which I'm happy with...

You don't get it? I don't get it! The more I read this thread the more annoyed I am! I presume from your username you are the same age as me. And your costs to insure a £30k car, with your two fault claims, is a mere £50 more than it is for me to insure my £500 car to the same level, and I've never made a claim in 17 years of driving. How does that work?

It almost seems that the insurance companies can't believe I've never claimed and so keep adjusting my policy expecting me to crash. I don't think I've ever paid less for insurance than the year before. The guy I just spoke to says that as a whole the insurance industry is paying out £1.20 for every £1 it receives in premiums, but that doesn't seem plausible.

I'm the same age, my car is 7 years older, I do less miles, I don't want business mileage. And I can't get a quote below £400, and it's gone up. What am I doing wrong? It can't even be to do with the area I live in, because with the value of the car and the excess taken in to account, even it were certain the car would get stolen they'd effectively only be giving me a refund.

I expect it is due to living in south yorkshire. Most of my northern friends and my ex have quite expensive policies.

I think the cheapest i ever paid was about £650 on my old 320CD prior to me getting any points on my license

what's the criteria for classic car insurance? do these prices ever show up in a search on one of the comparison sites or do you need to contact a specialist?

I insured a 1.1 Mk1 Fiesta on a classic policy for £119 PA when I was 22, with no NCB (was used on my main car) and with the car kept on the road.

I was quoted £230 for an LPG 4.0 Wrangler for the Mrs with me as a named driver. After taking off £60 cashback through Quidco, GRAND TOTAL of £170 fully comp protected SDP and commuting with unlimited milage.

Bought through AVIVA. AViva and direct line don't do comparison sites, so always worth 10 minutes checking their sites out.

Me.....VW Golf v5 fully comp protected £245 with £50 cashback again via Aviva.

Both no accidents / claims and aged 46, living in London.

I'll second the Aviva / cashback thing.. I've been with them for 2 years now as I can't touch their quotes elsewhere... even Elephant and the usual cheapies were substantially more.... and Aviva paid the cashback after about 7 weeks as well, so it's a genuine deal. (I did it through Top Cashback, if anyone wants a referral let me know as we both make more money that way!)

I'll back up Aviva as well, substantially cheaper than the competition. It's worth checking the companies that don't appear on comparison sites.

The poll suggests that loads of PH'ers have selected "less than £150".

I'm feeling a bit sheepish about spending £1000+ a year on insurance for 2 cars as a 30+ year old, no-claims, never crashed/claimed, 'sensible' driver.

I can only conclude that:

A) PH'ers are old farts with 80 years no clams bonus
B) PH'ers are people driving 10 year old 800cc hatchbacks
C) PH'ers are jokers/Bullstters
or
D) My premiums are high as I am subsidising all of the above
