Let's put it this way - they were advertising a T5 off our fleet and claiming 300bhp when I know it wasn't.

None of our T5s were ever chipped. (Apart from the paint!)

That's something I can believe, but there always is the constant rumour that they have been, which can't exactly be unproven by us civvies.

It's often confirmed by someone who's mate shared a flat with a cop, and they told them that the guy they used to be on shift with told them they were all chipped up with cop shocks, cop tyres, cop brakes, and a cop engine.

From 07 reg onwards, the only 'cop' regarding Volvos was as in 'not much cop!'

Unreliable, expensive to fix and they took ages to re-appear from the workshops.

I've thought of buying ex-plod cars but this thread does it for me. Unless it's one that you've first hand knowledge of and only used in a fairly cushy job like ferrying around the brass around it'll have been caned. I'll stick with what I have.

Mind you. Given that so many people hold the mistaken belief that they're a sound buy I might start trading in them.
All that based on never owning one.... you must have special powers! either that or you hold the mistkaen belief that you know everything about something you have no experience of.

FFS unless you are the first 2nd hand buyer, you may well end up with a former police car without realising.

Go to an auction and then decide.

When I last went (2007ish) there were a vast difference in the quality of the cars on sale. Absolutely massive.

A lot were scraped to the point of being an insurance write off, others were mint.

Personally, I'd check out the following bits which you may not have thought of.

1. Lights - the flasher units etc get ripped out and the main beam etc can go on the blink. Can be a pain to sort

2. Interior - how easy will it be to put back together. An E60 with the centre console missing could be a right pain

3. bodywork - how much will sorting out the paint cost

then budget for the normal auction tat, a clutch maybe to be safe.

Remember, all police cars are recorded as having been used by the police first, so there's no hiding it.

I'd probably have one, never say never, it just needs to be the right money. Back when I used to go a 4 year od 80k mile E39 530D was £6k. Retail was £14k. Makes you think

The cheapest BMW to that spec on autotrader is £14k. Guessing that'll come up at least £6k short of that?
