Call me a cynic, but it isnt going to be easy to return it in reality is it?

"you want to return the car for a full refund sir? Absolutely no problem at all."

I believe it when I hear an actual example!
That's the advantage of dealing with a "name" like Tesco - I wouldn't expect there to be the slightest problem.

YOUR CONTRACT WITH THE SELLER
20.1 If you buy a car on Tescocars.com you will have a contract with the Seller (and not Tesco Cars)

They are nothing more than a website and a couple of people on the phone trying to sell you finance and insurance. If there is any issue with thecar they are going to point you to the "seller".

You aren't - they are just charging a fee to reserve the car. At delivery payment is to the seller - you have no comeback to Tesco.

So, you have 7 days to reject the car IN WRITING. Better be quick and hope the post works eh?

In addition, the seller can charge compensation for any new damage etc....

22. CHANGING YOUR MIND: CANCELLING YOUR CONTRACT WITH THE SELLER
22.1 The Seller hopes that you will be happy with your car purchase but should you wish to cancel your contract with the Seller for the purchase of the car you have the right to do so up to seven days after the Handover and you will be entitled to a refund from the Seller. Please note that your Handling Fee and Delivery Fee (if applicable) will not be refunded.
22.2 If you exercise your right to cancel in accordance with paragraph 22.1 you will need to give us notice of this in writing. Please call Tesco Cars Customer Services and they will explain the process for cancellation.

23. YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO THE SELLER
23.1 You promise that you will behave responsibly towards the Seller and you agree that, because the Seller gives you the right to change your mind when you buy a car (see paragraph 22 above), you will take reasonable care of the vehicle within the 7 day cooling off period.
23.2 If you do not take reasonable care of the car and you then exercise your right to cancel your contract, the Seller may be able to claim for compensation from you under The Cancellation of Contracts made in a Consumer's Home or Place of Work etc Regulations (2008), for example, for any damage to the car while it was in your possession. If you cancel your contract we will arrange for the car to be inspected again by the RAC against the relevant Report (see paragraph 7.3 above) and notify you of any damage to the car while it was in your possession.

Tescocars.com is owned and operated by Carsite Ltd, a company registered in England whose registered office is at Sussex Innovation Centre, Science Park Square, Falmer, East Sussex BN1 9SB.

As you've pointed out, it's owned by Carsite, but they trade as Tesco Cars. So there's quite a lot of scope for a Watchdog programme at some point in the future which would be all about Tesco.

A quick Google elsewhere indicates a common problem is that cars people reserve (as they near the end of their lease) never actually become available.

So this thread should actually read 'Tesco to sell someone else's used cars and collect an administration fee along the way'

No different than pretty much everything else they do 'direct' I suppose.

It isnt even that.

Carsite use Tesco branding and Tesco get an admin fee for the privilege.

No problem at all.....except the £99 administration fee and £149 delivery fee which are non-refundable.

Sounds like an expensive test drive to me!

Satanco, having won the tender to exterminate the dispossessed, elderly and redundant, then stumbled across a neat idea to court favour with the eco-eugenicists, namely, reprocessing them.

Remaining unchecked for decades and having eventually destroyed vast swathes of the socio-economic landscape, Satanco's outgoing Oberführer, Herr Tiedemann Lehmann, decided that since none of their customers could actually afford to buy Satanco's 2 for 1 offer fish fingers, then the masses themselves should become product.

A spokesman for The Competition Commission dismissed suggestions inferring that Satanco's duplicitous, immoral and downright criminal activities were in any way an issue nor that their 99% control of GDP constituted the remotest trace of monopoly infraction.

Moreover, the head of The DWP expressed some surprise that there was any question that people who did not work for Satanco should be in any way unwilling to surrender themselves for conversion into slices of green sandwich filling.

...and judging by their pricing, not cheap either.

LOL at the website. See below.

Loads of adverts for the same car? Check.

Loads of adverts with the wrong picture? Check.

Lots of overpriced cars? Check.

Lots of ex Hire cars? Check: "We expect this car to have covered approximately 18592 miles. Car type: ex-daily rental."

Lots of detail about spec and useful information in the adverts? No.

Could a trader tell me what this should book at? Looking at Autotrader it is about £2,000 too expensive... (especially considering it is about 1,000 miles off a service).

I hate things that don't make sense - why would a 56reg car be coming off lease in May?

And it's old for a lease car. Perhaps it was leased as a used car? Unlikely though.

And having run company cars for 20 years (and I looked after mine) there's no way I would touch ANY 90K+ mile ex-lease car with a barge-pole. I'm sure people could be lucky, but our cars (mainly A4 & 3 Series) used to go back at 3yrs with around 90K on them and most of them were shagged.

Could be on a 5 year lease / PCP, or maybe one of the sources of cars would be somebody like VWFS and Tesco are going to try to punt on the cars that are scheduled for return, if they dont sell them within a short set period they get sent to auction . . . . makes for a very small outlay

It's only approx 4.5yrs old though. Could perhaps have been a 90K limit on the lease, although that was never enforced on our lease cars - we kept them for 3yrs regardless. Some did immense mileages.

I agree it is odd as you cant get 4.5 year leases. Anyone checked the reg to see if it's showing up as having had previous owners?

RE VWFS, they seem to auction of all there vehicles at BCA a few times a month. Always very popular sales, everything attracts high bids and seems to end up for sale at supermarkets and main dealers.

5 year lease, 90k mileage limit as you said (some leasing companies will hammer you for exceeding it, some won't) or even 5 year lease as a co-car and the person left/retired ?

This is just like a few of Tesco's other online ventures - their tyre service is operated by Black Circles, etc.

As said, you're a lot more likely to get a result if something goes wrong with Tesco's name in the mix IMO - a Watchdog report about Carsite wouldn't be as near as big an issue as one about "Tesco Cars".

  • Wish I'd registered the domain name years ago and sold it to them though

Quite a libellous statement there - can you prove they did?

Not a legal department I'd be messing with hehe
