What if they are testing new materials just for the new range? Or maybe driving round normal streets (etc) with microphones so they can measure road noise, external noise creep and the like?

Why is it so difficult to believe that manufacturers test in the real world as well as test tracks? We see all the major cars in the Arctic circle and Death Valley testing. Why not a B&Q in Basingstoke? Yes, they will use automated machines, but NOTHING gives a car a better real world workout than the real world. Throw a few toddlers, a few dogs muddy after a walk, the golf clubs (we are talking about a Jag after all hehe ), and all the general detritus a busy person will throw at and around an everyday car (crumbs, dust, receipts and the rest) - how many machines can replicate that faithfully?

I'd even say that the testers would be looking at intangible things, like 'feel', and 'public perception'. Things difficult to find on a test track or via a machine.

Surely its obvious that real world testing has the massive advantage that Joe Public will take pics of the car and it gets people talking about it. Wasn't it Jag who had a hashtag on the camo of the convertible F Type when testing them?

exactly my point, this is probably 90-100% of the reason they do it. All the rest of the testing can be done in secret.

No it can't. Besides, what is wrong with free publicity while doing a job?

There's a Ferrari somewhere in here, so I'm told.

Spotted this Jaguar prototype about an hour ago at the Shires Retail Park in Leamington Spa today. Not sure what model it is, but it looks a little bit like an F-Type with a hardtop. Sounded incredible and it looks pretty awesome too!!

Don't get Jag. Surely you release the coupe, then the convertible?

Who's going to buy the hard over the rag top?

I would! I think it looks fantastic in Coupé form. I think the cabriolet looks mighty fine too, but the Coupé rings more true to the E-Type ancestry in my eyes.

Now, how can I finance on of those on a pittance?!

i don't think it's a dead cert that the convertible will sell a lot more than the coupe. There have been lots of examples of models with both variants where either has outstripped the other. I think it's still a bit unclear where the F sits as far as competitors and buyer demographic etc. Certainly the only ones I've seen look like they are being driven by 50+ late-mid-life crisis and rich wife/businesswoman.

Those wheels on the Masonary 458 are just perfect for it. The sunblinds however aren't my thing smile

Parked up for a few hours in Earlsfield, SW London tonight, McLaren P1 test mule RX62 HXY.

Photos do not do this car justice.

And as she was back at the beginning of the year:

Wheels and the V10 wing badges are the obvious giveaways.
