SLEEPERS! Anyone have a street sleeper here?

It seems to me that so many posters don't understand the concept of a sleeper, and have been told it, that now folk are being ridiculous, bandwagoning, and denying everything. I think I preferred the earlier misunderstandings.

a sleeper is something you wouldn't look twice at as being fast in any way shape or form but then smokes you from the lights and you sit there thinking why you wasted £50k on this barge you are driving - the sales man said it really would make me feel more manly and my pen is would defo look bigger but now i'm sat wondering why i have a sad face are these open backed leather driving gloves really not helping either???

I'm all for sleepers but when they're borderline dangers... I just don't really get it? The Astra, take a base spec Mk3 and drop in a B204 engine from a Saab with a remap and a couple of extra tweaks and yes it's 270bhp... but how the hell is that going to be usable in the real world? It's running on budget Chenshung tyres and doesn't look like there's much in the way of suspension work so really, anything less than a bone dry, long straight and it's going to get abused by a lot of less powerful but more complete cars?
I think to be a sleeper, it needs to be able to use the power increase... so some suspension / handling work, set of 15" steels with sticky tyres and bigger brakes hidden out of sight would make for better tool to pick on the unwary. Dumping huge power in to a standard, base model car without supporting mods doesn't really strike me as decent option. Granted it'd surprise a few people, but only when the conditions are right.
Bugger trying to put that Astra round some corners with those tyres and several hundred kilos of Saab lump out the front.

A sleeper doesnt have to corner, they are traffic light racers. Totally disagree with your definition: any car should be safe. If that Astra has had no stopping power increase/work and handles like a drunk duck on UberWeed it should be marked down and will maybe fail ....unless, it is just used at SantaPod On that note: a car can be lower on power than the Astra but handle like a dream, stop on a sixpenny piece etc ect, as such it can qualify as a sleeper but in the "ultimate" stakes it will also be marked down for being low on nutter-power.

Hmmm, debatable... very few people, even car types would notice a 20mm drop and see the brakes behind some bigger diameter steel wheel. 270bhp through an open diff and budget 14" tyres, that's not winning many traffic light races.
To me a sleeper has to be surprisingly better in every department than what it's looks would suggest.
A sleeper should be something totally unexpected. It doesn't have to be a rotting car but it should be something out of the ordinary. Like a Toyota Hilux packing a 2JZ or a Ford Transit hiding away a 2.3L Focus RS motor or perhaps a Mazda 2 packing a 13B-REW. Or perhaps the engine transplant isn't that exotic but the car should still be quick enough to surprise at most all of the hot hatches today (except maybe the AMG A45 as that is very quick). Externally it shouldn't be running on Mickey Thompson ET Streets or have huge brakes or anything else to give it away. It should just look normal on the outside. And the motor should be silenced as much as possible so that it is even more unsuspecting. This is my description of what a sleeper really is.

Superb. Both definitely sleepers, the cabriolet in particular is perfect because from the factory it would have likely been circa 150hp motor that was never regarded as wildly fast. Anyhow a 4.3 AMG V8 lump with circa 300hp is going to transform a posers car to something a fair bit more potent.
Im sorry I have followed this thread for a while but I am still not sure what a street sleeper is. If looking at the OP then a street sleeper is an "old, incompetent, humble, small engined, and perhaps embarrassing car" that's been tweeked so its a bit quick in a straight line.
Its followed up by the comment "especially if the challenge is raised to you by a smug looking driver, constantly revving his engine at the lights, just before they turn to green!"
But surely if the person is in a "old, incompetent, humble, small engined, and perhaps embarrassing car" why would someone in the decent car try to challenge them? It makes no sense.
Also apart from the very occasional traffic light grand prix why would you want to be seen in an "old, incompetent, humble, small engined, and perhaps embarrassing car". I like a car to handle and if its only purpose it to outdrag another car to 60mph, its pretty pointless.
If I want to get ahead of someone at a set of traffic lights, I pretend I don't want to. Just sit there on idle while nonchalantly watching the lights with a bored look on my face, maybe even wait for the green before mashing the throttle.

My Datsun Cherry Turbo was defo not a sleeper as it had a huge intercooler dangling out the front. It did however match a Astra vxr in traffic light Grand Prix. This made it hilariously fun despite the fact it wouldn't corner or stop.

(If you use crap fuel for example the car knows this and goes to another set of fuel and timing maps) There are many of these maps (30+) inside the ecu that can be changed to whatever you like like immobiliser settings, maf settings thr list goes on, hacked ecu ROM's will have even more

They only matter of you a planning a race. A sleeper is about a sudden turn of unexpected speed IMO, not a sustained drive so much.
