Right you lot, I need help.
Been offered what looks to be a very clean, sub 80k W210 E240 for circa £1k.
FSH blah blah blah
Gold idea? Sounds like it to me but I know nothing about these apart from the fact they rust faster than they go
Pros - should be very reliable. It's a strong engine and box. Very comfy. Been offered what looks to be a very clean, sub 80k W210 E240 for circa £1k.

Cons - fairly slow and uneconomical, esp the earlier 240. Rust.
Check front subframe in particular, it's hidden by the undertray.
They also seem to consume lambda sensors quite quickly.
The E320 was the much better engine. Much stronger and the same real world fuel consumption.
Still, if the car is relatively rust free then it's worth it. If you can remove front and rear wheel arch liners, I'd do so. Check carefully around the front spring mounts and if estate then pull the spare wheel out and have a good poke underneath it...same goes for the other side.

The Barge Gods have given, but they also take away...
Yesterday, the S124 went in for its MOT. It passed. Hooray.
Today, as I hooned back from a tip-run, sorry visited the local recycling centre, the car juddered and lurched under full acceleration. It was fine with a gentle press, but full throttle made it cough and splutter like a TB victim. Any ideas?
CdG, I assume the 124 is an automatic?`Sounds a little like torque shudder to me, can apparently feel like the engine is hesitating aswell, so I'm told, and my e38 behaved like that on the first drive after winter hibernation, it felt exactly the way you describe it, thankfully that went away by itself after a very loud threat inside the car to sell it and replace it with another, scared the poor thing I think ..Yesterday, the S124 went in for its MOT. MAF?
That is the air mass meter in the air intake, circled in red below. It can go bad when contaminated with dirt or oil. It can also be sabotaged by an unscrupulous garage, but it seems unlikely. It could also be that some incompetent has removed the lead and forgot to put it back for some reason.
You can check if the MAF is doing anything by unplugging it. If the ECU is missing a signal from the MAF it goes to a more conservative fuel mapping, you will hear it run differently when you remove it, if not then it is buggeredMAF?

Thanks for the helpful comments everyone. My chap seems to think the symptoms sound like fuel starvation under load, and that it'll be fine as-is unless it affects low-rev running. I move house on Monday so don't have much time to address it, so am hoping it does the move and then I'll find someone to look at it at the other end if it doesn't clear up.
Interestingly, my wife hadn't noticed it, and she is the first to criticise the old bus if things aren't right so maybe a more gentle form of driving disguises it. Anyway, unless it fails catastrophically (please no!) I think I'll have to live with it for now.

Tonight I am driving this. It's a 300 CE-24. Impressions? It's not that fast; and I prefer my estate car. I'm driving it to see whether I really want a coupé and I think the answer might be 'no'.
All is not well with it, either. In traffic, the temperature gauge heads north of 100 deg C, fast. Yet the radiator fan seems to turn and the coolant level is fine. I have ordered a fan clutch but I think it maybe needs a new radiator. And the (five speed auto) gearbox is well clunky. Something is up there. And the fuel gauge has a mind of its own. It belongs to a friend of mine and it irritates me that he has allowed niggling faults to remain unattended to.
And I had to wash and polish the thing, top up all the fluids and hoover it out. Some people.

I didn't know they did an e38 manual in any market. Every day is a school day

Manual 725tds/30d/28i/30i(both V8 and later I6) on the continent. We got the 3.0 V8 manual option when the model was launched, but it was quickly dropped from the lists. We didn't get offered any diesel variants or the M54 730i in 2000, soldiered on with the M52 2.8 that was otherwise superseded across the BMW range. I didn't know they did an e38 manual in any market. Every day is a school day
E38 interior with cloth looks very strange, again not available in UK on any spec.

Always fancied a W8. My spidey-senses suggest this one may have had a hard life though.

"Bullet holes in boot" listed just between "pads and disks" and "wonky glovebox" as if it is a case of "oh, they all do that, sir."

But in all seriousness I suspect the seller has the common Lithuanian given name 'Karolis' and considers himself a bit of a punk.
