Front wheel drive 'Ultimate Driving Machine'
I'm not sure that the fact it's FWD is really relevant. There are plenty of FWD cars out there which drive and handle better than the vast majority of RWD cars. Would you prefer to drive a Renaultsport Megane down a twisty road or a Lexus IS250? It's more the fact that it's a gawky box which is driven badly by pensioners.
I'll have a cheeky fiver on it not handling anywhere nearly as good as a ReanultSport Megane. Or as well as anything this side of a Tesco trolley with a wonky wheel.

I think BMW have run out of niches to create so are building everything else. They even do a 7 seat version!

Definitely not one of these.

Sad bloke that I am, I drove the long way home today via where I saw it in case it was around regularly.

There are a few American imports around my neck of the woods (Cambridge)- lots of people seem to like late-shape US Ford Fusions round here. Are there any American mid-size saloons along those lines that I might be thinking of if it wasn't a Chinese or Japanese one?

There is a mid-sized Korean saloon on the market now, I'm afraid I can't remember what it is, but I saw one a while back and it foxed me too. Could be that it meets your criteria? Maybe try their new-car websites?

Lexus think that little old UK isn't ready for this.
(I think they are wrong. They'd sell a fair amount to people for whom the range of available SUVs just aren't big, hideous or expensive enough).

If you tolerate this, then your children will be next.

This is a pretty big, ugly and expensive Toyota though and there aren't exactly loads of them (although the badge might put some people off).

I was behind one of these ungainly devices in traffic earlier today. A BMW 218d. It reminded me of nothing more than a wheelchair-converted Ford Escort van.

Remember when BMWs used to be sleek Teutonic Ultimate Driving Machines?
I may have misremembered this but I am certain when he was head of BMW Berndt Pischetsrieder (around the Rover buying years) he was asked whether BMW would make a people carrier and he responded along the lines of "No, if you want to carry people buy a people carrier, if you want to carry art buy a BMW".

Quite a few of these in the Philippines, LX470 or something they are called?

Are the Toyota and Lexus 4x4s above the same basic car? They look very similar.

Yes, I've seen them both badged as a Landcruiser or Lexus, I'll try and get a pic on my way home from work later.

yes

Apart from the size I guess they're actually fairly subtle and understated compared to a recent Range Rover. Well the Toyota version is at least.

Tons here in the Middle east, of both the Lexus & Toyota versions.

Have we had the TVR Cerbera Speed 12 re-imagining thing by "TBR" with an Aston Martin 6.0 V12 yet? Owner would consider offers around the £400k mark. Lol.

I'd always put the number of American models in that neck of the woods down to the proximity of Mildenhall and Lakenheath, rather than them being imports.

Yes. Those U.S. military bases are awash with crap, huge yank tanks as the personnel get free importation of their own cars and they buy their fuel on base.

I read somewhere that all US personnel were banned from overtaking on B roads because they kept crashing and ending up in ditches. LHD, inexperienced drivers, big engines = crash.
