Nothing illustrates better the limits of a person's aspirations than a personalised plate. Whether you like it or not its shouts " look at me, I've made it ".
Except, perhaps, PEN 1S which is genuinely amusing.
Crude, maybe, but amusing in what way?
This is it isn't it? You show your friends your new penis plate and you all have a good laugh for about 1 minute.

Then the jokes gone. You are left with the word penis on your car and the joke is on you!
Irony, self deprecation?
Exactly!

Same for something like 2 1NCH

Would be amusing on something like a Murcielago. I mean if you owned one you hardly care what the public thought would you? Most people would just assume you were a tosser - the majority through jealousy. So it would be refreshing for the Lambo owner to be poking fun at themselves.

For once I wouldn't care a plate had been illegally spaced (which usually I cannot abide!)

Why? It's turned into the biggest joke on PH, the mods have left it open because 'arris started it so they can't close it, funny as fk for those reasons alone.

Some kind of corporate identity this rofl

Bought a car some years ago with JOY41 as a plate.

Sold the car to a collector in Japan, who didn't want the plate, so kept it.

I quite like it.

I must be in the rare minority then. Just bought a brand new car, and while waiting for it bought a 58 plate private reg for it.

Those that know cars will know it's the new facelift model which only came out about 6 months ago, so can't be a 58 plate.

Those that don't know cars will just think it's 5 yr old.
Suits me.

Agree for many that try too hard.
Mine is my user name and is merely a good-looking tidy embellishment to my pride and joy that a boggo plate would spoil.
In reality, it's an appearance item that goes into the same category as:
alloy wheels that weigh the same as steels
wider low profile tyres that nobody comes near the limits of
front air dams that serve little purpose
rear spoilers that have no effect
front foglights nobody needs
stripes that serve no purpose
rolled exhaust tips
painted bumpers...I mean, come on!

They are all appearance items that we are all guilty of spending money on and which we are free to spend our money on.

I have zero designer clothing, watches, shoes etc,(WTF is all that about) and I drive Fords, albeit nice Fords. I shop in Lidl, don't waste money on newspapers of expensive coffee or expensive suits but I like my plate, for me, for my car, for nobody else.

I have no opinion one way or the other. A number plate is just a barcode, in essence. If you want to paint yours a pretty colour, then fine.

What is significant, though, is that this subject elicits such extreme responses. Generally, the haters swear a lot, and claim not to be bothered, and the lovers seem blinkered and truculent.

I've never come across another topic on PH (although foopball might be one but I never go there) which generates such disproportionate ire. And there is very much an attitude of "Chimpy was only asking for your opinion. But if you agree with him, you're wrong".

Number of haters being called names by lovers: lots
Number of lovers being called names by haters: not so many

This 100% - very well put.

Does every person on here passing judgement on here about PPs have no labelled clothing? No embellishments whatsoever on their cars? Do they not only shop at Waitrose because they don't want to shop with the "common people" in Tesco.

There's a great deal of hypocrisy on this thread.

And on the subject of PPs - the absolute best are the big orange Mornflake lorries - I look for these instead of Stobarts because they (most of them) all have "OAT" numberplates, the biggest shiniest one has "OAT 1" which IMO is absolutely ace cool I saw L50 OAT this morning.

all very good stuff until the mini rant about clothes, shoes etc. if you can appreciate why someone would want a private plate for appearance purposes then surely you can understand why someone would want some nice shoes or a suit for the same purpose?
