Jag XKR and BMW 840Ci
Discussion
Having had a few Jags, not XKRs and an 840CI
840 all the way, near enough all genuine parts are now in the value line so fairly cheap, ours has done 140k or so and to be honest, ignoring things we have done in a "just because" frame of mind it owes us, tyres, 2 rear springs, set of pads, some stab bars, a lower arm in 4-5 years of ownership, everything works, well the LCD display as gone funny but they all do it.
Compare that to the Jags we had, electrically they are st no other way to put it, they are st, radios which will not recognise the CD changer meaning you have to buy a new head unit and track down the wiring harness for one, electric aerials that stop working, most annoying thing of all, their want for constantly wanting to blow manifold gaskets or cracking manifolds, from what I have heard on "internet lingo" and research into buying one
1996-2000 models can/do suffer nikasil problems
Suspension bushes on lower arms front can wear out stupidly quick which can cause steering and suspension damage/problems
Tensioners IIRC which means your timing chain stops timing the engine properly
Parts prices, Jaguar prices will make your eyes water I remember going in for some bolts to hold wing on, pack of 5 £24
Not the best of handling cars from what I understand
Electrics though, god they are awful in a Jag when they rear their head with a problem, had probably 4 different cd changers, 10 different standard oem headunits and it would never recognise the CD
Personally for me, it would have to be the 840 it wins
Can seat 4 happily to be honest
Easy to work on yourself
Parts aren't that expensive but genuine BMW is advised
For what they are, they are near bullet proof if you buy a good one and maintain it, remember they didn't sell very well so the people who did want them looked after them well with a few slipping through the net, the Jag sold in bucket loads for people who wanted a flash car and there are a lot more ropey ones out there.
4.4 V8 is fantastic, very few 4.0 around most had engines replaced
And it is
Pillerless coupe with pop up headlights
Just look at it, the Jag will never get you a second glance, the 8er always will

Is the 850i (or Ci or CSi) as reliable?
No need for the 850Ci really and they are a little older [but cheaper]. No performance improvements, but a Csi will set you back a minimum of £15k if you can find one, but it gives you an extra 100bhp , up from 286 to 380!840 Sport all the way. Now on my 2nd and it's a peach! Go to www.clube31.com for any advice as there's a wealth of knowledge to be gleaned. As the OP said go for a 97, 98 or if you can find one a 99.
Few little foibles as in any car that's over 10 year sold. Pixels on the trip computer can be missing [ fixable ] but all in all a pretty robust vehicle.
Drove to Spain and back in ours March this year. Didn't miss a beat and averaged 26mpg.
Superfluous picture of mine!
In my sad old eyes the design still looks fresh, as they weren't replaced with a newer model immediately. When they did, if you can call it a replacement, they released the 6 series....

Was mooching around on the clasifieds and saw this one lately. Was really tempted, thankfully it has been sold, but in that gold colour, looks amazing...

Thanks for the input, gents.
I'm a BMW zealot, but have always liked the look of the Jag since it came out.
There's space in my life for a 'GT-ish' car so it would be rude not indulge myself. The charged XKRs certainly did pique my interest for obvious reasons and I'm trying to diversify my fleet so it seemed like the natural choice - outside of the ruinous offerings from TVR.

OP...See you're in the West Mids area, so if you can make your way to Shrewsbury you're welcome to take it out for a 'leisurely' spin!
Cheers, Shrew. I may well take you up on that!Wish ours still looked like this.
Now it looks like this
Wont even go there on the insurance, tip I will give you, get the car valued and on an agreed value policy, ours eventually paid up but it took several months and £15k worth of hire car to pay out the correct market value for the car, now just have to fix it, not bad completely shafted for a non fault claim.
