I have a tax disc in my car thats i bought 5 weeks a go, the tax runs out on the 30 06 2011 but i cant see any writting on it apart from a stamp that says DEALER, looks like the writting is worn off.

But the .gov site says unlicenced

Sounds like you've been sold a car with a fake tax disc.

It looks as though theyve made the DVLA/VRO aware (probably to benefit from a free disc for their new car), but theyve left the now cancelled and worthless disc in the car windscreen when selling it.

A bit of a scrubber's trick, I think.

You might get a fine as well for it being untaxed and not SORNed between now and when you bought it.

Was it a dealer or private?

Dealers can only licence new cars they register, so if it has been stamped dealer on the disc, then it will not have been registered at the DVLA as taxed, the disc has just been nicked.
Even if the car is registered as disabled class, it would show up on website as taxed until the date of liability, which was end of Jan as has already been said.
Looks like your seller was on the fiddle and I would be taking the disc out of the car, if you haven't already, as plod don't take that kind of thing nicely, even though you may have nothing to do with it.

Thank you for the replies.

I went to the local post office and they didnt have a clue at all, i bought a new disc so im all legal whic was my main concern.

Here is the dodgy disc

The guy i bought it from bought it with this tax disc, must be the dealer he got it from.

Ive HPI'd the car and everything adds up, must be someone who wanted to shift it 'with' tax. (not)

Not helped by the dealer using a normal black biro instead of the DVLA supplied ones with the white cap specifically for issuing VED discs - which have ink that doesn't dissappear so easily following prolonged exposure to sunlight.

What purpose would that serve? They just issue the disc, the previous RK left it displayed in their car and the "trader" nicked it and passed it off as belonging to the vehicle the OP bought from him.

It must have been done to sweeten the sale only, as any anpr would have picked it up as untaxed. As far as doing anything, guess it's best to just throw it in the bin, unless you want to let the police or DVLA know, but then expect a few hours of statements, from which I can't see it going anywhere, as I would expect the disc number to come up on the database as missing or void? By the dealer.
Guess you are fortunate, you picked up on it, rather than it being clamped one night or as above, being pulled after passing anpr op and having to try and explain your innocence!
Just goes to show how people try and pull wool over people's eyes!

Surely your V5 application will set the date in time at which you become liable for the vehicle and its tax?

Just get taxed now, to the beginning of June, don't wait until July, you should be fine, DVLA won't worry about the other week.
