After years of Evo's i'm on the lookout for another car and have always hankered after either a Corrado VR6 or a 944 S2.

I always look to buy the best I can and will pay up to £6.5k, of which there's quite a few of each available at the moment.

Which would be the best to buy and why?

(I'm leaning more towards the 944).

I'd go for the porsche, although the VR6 is a lovely sounding engine the other car is a..... porsche!

Can't comment on the Porker, but as an ex VR6 Storm owner I can highly recommend them. Your budget will get you a very good one too. Not many storms left now....

Still love the way they look too (when unmolested) Wrote mine off frown

Depends on what you're buying it for.

For track work I would go for the Porsche - and I say that as an ex-Corrado owner who used to track mine. It was a great car but the 944 really does make a great track car.

Bear in mind that both cars will be extremeley long in the tooth now.

£6.5k would probably buy you one of the best Corrados in the country I would imagine though.

Had this dilemma about 12 years ago. Was after a corrado, ended up with a 944 s2.
I found the vr6 motor disappointing tbh, thirsty, heavy and just did not seem to go any better than a 16 v.

The 3 litre 16 v in the porker is a good lump. BT got your budget, you could get a nice 944 turbo or even a 968 with the vary valve motor, ( although I prefer the looks of the 944 over the 968).

I still have my porker, it's been that good.

S2 is much underrated pork, eclipsed by the Turbo.

For my money the S2 is the better car (owned both) they share the smooth nose bodyshape, so all good there, but the power delivery on the S2 is just sublime, linear all through the range, with a low rev pull the turbo can only dream about.

OK, so the turbo is quite a bit more powerfull, but the trade off with lag and no low down torque is not worth it.

As good as a Corrado is, the two are not really in the same league.

S2.

VR6 is a nose heavy FWD which isn't a bad car but isn't worth anything like what they cost.

944 are built like tanks (but check the sills etc as they are getting on a bit) beautifully balanced and RWD - there really is no comparison.

Great replies and info guys, thanks very much !

I think you're all confirming what i'm thinking.

I'm no longer bothered about all out power, hence why I mentioned the S2 rather than the Turbo.

The car would be more of a weekend tourer when I go out with my lass and 11 yr old son. (I've got a company car for during the week).

I'm looking for something that's comfortable, quick and plenty of low down torque. I also like older cars.

I've had most performance saloons & hot hatches over the years and fancy something different for a change.

So is anything else in this bracket better than the S2 then?

Hmmm check the rear seats I've had 5yr olds happily fitting in my old 944 but I'm not sure an 11yr old would be comfy unless your GF is v small and can slide the seat forwards.

I can squeeze into the back of my 924 and im 6ft and over 16sthehe so I would say you will be fine!

I'd agree with this. If the passenger slides their seat forward then there is acceptable room in the back of a Corrado. However, with the seat slid right back it is cramped, especially as the seats go down to the floor (unless you angle them up) meaning the rear passenger can't tuck their feet under it.

Another ex-Corrado owner here who'd go for the Porsche unless you need the extra practicality that the Corrado offers.

If you need back seats then i'd suggest the corrado over the 944.

I also faced a similar decision, i was looking at various 924s and 944 16vs but now have a Corrado G60 and my brother has a Vr6.

That said in your position with a £6k budget I would be happier spending 6k on a Porsche but doubt I could bring myself to spend more than £3k on a Corrado.

The other thing to consider is I have only ever had positive feedback about the Corrados from petrolheads and non petrolheads, no one has ever told me that I have a poor mans Porsche;)

Well a short one - go and see one and try to fit them in.

I have a 944 S2, I love the whiffy old thing, mine is a cab and as such it is wonderful to get the roof down but it is a bit wobbly, the handling is great but I can only imagine how good a coupe is on sensibly uprated suspension, after all it is an optimal layout, unlike those other less popular models Porsche have made on occasions, with the engine in the back ffs, I mean, what kind of nutjob puts the engine in the back then spends fifty years making it work despite being a crap layout biggrin

The engine is really nice, the power delivery is really enjoyable, it isnt scarily fast by any measure but for an oldie it still gets more of a move on than people expect. It doesnt sound fantastic like a V8 but it still sounds better than 90 percent of cars om the road. A VR6 Corrado is still a fine thing but I dont think they were ever in the 944's league.

This may sound a bit weird but it is one of those cars that after a blast, when you get out you feel like patting it.....

Just noticed the rear seat requirement, er, 944's have a seat back, a squab but nowhere to put your legs in the back !
