Decidedto sell the RR, Mrs wants something smaller (easier to park) and we want to buy our first house (RR sale being a helpful deposit)

So advertise car normal way. Lots of calls of which I describe the car down to every last detail, including the lowest I will take. I explain that as not to waste time if your unhappy with description or price that don't turn up....... what happens..... Mr A turns up family in tow.... Wants to drive the car so I take him and family out, they then proceed to pick up on all the faults that I told him about over the phone, get back to mine, he then wants to negotiate on the price!!!

Do people nowadays just enjoy wasting time??

AAAARRRRRGGGHHH!! Rant over.....

NEXT... what next? Mrs wants A2 (over my dead body!!)

She wants small economical, I want a compromise, suggestions, budget £5 - £6k, I'm think ST170

Over to you PH

Thanks

rofl I don't think you can call an ST170 a compromise on economical.

How about a 150bhp diesel Golf?

Best not to advertise it in that manner to be honest, you're always going to get offers. Usually it works, due to the "bird in the hand" effect. That said, maybe you are overvaluing it? You say you told him about the faults, does the price reflect them?

Fair point....

I'll re-phrase, she wants smaller than RR and better mpg than 18, I want something that i wouldn't mind driving and that will still bring a smile to my face

Obviously I want the most I can get for the car, however I hate it when i travel long distance to view a car and its not as described on arrival. So I gave a figure that reflected the issues and that I was happy to take.

Just don't understand the point of agreeing to it over the phone, spend an hour no less looking over the car and then go against what we'd discussed - maybe test pilot??

First mistake

Never reveal the lowest you'll take. Under any circumstances.

Reason? EVERYONE will come to see the car and offer you lower than your 'lowest' price. It's just the way it is.

Make the buyer do all the work - if they ask you what the lowest you'll take is, tell them the car is up at £XK and you're open to sensible negotation. Insist that they make an offer from there.

I once advertised a car at £4k. My lowest price would have been £3500.
I had a guy come and view it and he asked me my lowest price. I told him to make an offer and he said
"How would you feel about £3800?"
Inside I jumped but I kept calm and said it'd have to be nearer £3900 or I'd struggle.
Sold for £3850 biggrin

sorry mate, but if buying used then I'd haggle no matter what the owner had previously said, its all part of it.

Basic rule, don't tell them your lowest price if you leave no room for negotiation. And also assume if you told them your lowest price you must have advertised it at a higher one, isn't this also a bit counter intuitive??

Good call, however the Mrs has to drive this too RWD (honestly worries me to death with her behind the wheel)

I'm thinking A2 - Mrs (keeps her happy)

House - both happy

then something for me - not sure what yet?

OR

the only car we've both considered is an A3 (i'm still not convinced on this either)

You can't possibly be scared of your Mrs driving a 3-series BMW? I can't imagine a much easier car to drive.

+1

Once was selling a car - advertised at £2250. Was willing to accept £1750. Buyer made an offer at £1900, we eventually settled on £2000.

Basically, know in your head at what point to walk away and say no, but expect bargaining. Build in bargaining room into the asking price.

When the buyer points out all the faults, he's giving you his reasoning for why he thinks it's worth less than you are asking for it. I wouldn't class that as a 'waste of time'.

Maybe... I feel that its advertised at a fair price, i'm happy to move on price due to aforementioned issues, just feel as though wasted time

Don't worry about RWD despite what the Troy Queefs on here will tell you its bloody difficult to get one to spin. Especially if you've got the traction control/ESP turned on.

Just had another call on the car, got viewing tomorrow.

So how to handle as the price is already an issue, the cars advertised at £12250, explained willing to sell at £11500 (so £750 off)

don't want to take any less than that, however guy is still stating £11500 too high

Now....

1- I know he wants the car for as little as possible and I want the most

2 - car can't be that badly priced as its generating calls at £12250

I hate this!! haven't done this for a while!!

If he's still coming to view at £11500 then he's interested at that price.Tell him a dealer has already offered you that anyway, but you can get a better deal on your next car without a p/x...
