im torn.

on the one hand there is the mk5 golf gti, 3 doors, in candy white, with a dsg box and the 18inch monza alloys.

the other car in question is a 5 door 130i in silver with the m sport wheels and suspension.

But which to go for?! Both a same price, both similar miles. Im 27, no children and want something that is fun, reasonably practical (golf clubs need to fit in the boot), reasonable economy and whilst being a nice place to be on my motorway slog, it has to entertain me at the weekend.

havent driven either but have previosuly had a big capacity rwd car in the shape of a 350z, and have had plenty of hot hatches, my current steed being a cooper s works.

both appear to have great writeups and both should offer reasonable running costs and minimal depreciation. But, which one to choose I just dont know!

So, fellow PH'ers .... help me decide!!

Try both.

IMO Bmw is a bit more fun, Golf is more practical.

fking hell.

An automatic, front wheel drive, two-litre, four cylinder, 200hp white VW or a three-litre straight six rear wheel drive BMW with a manual 'box and 265hp.

For the love of God man!

I'm not sure what's more worrying - the fact that the OP has to ask, or that right now 48%of PH members would take the 4 pot FWD VAG wagon

Surely the R32 is a closer match to the BMW, I would not want either of them but if pushed I would go for the VW.

The Golf's now in the lead! Astounding!

Those of you voting for it please can you explain why? I'd love to know, especially if you've driven them both as I have.

Strictly speaking it`s a dual clutch manual, not an automatic........

........however, I`d have the 130i!

Probably best to get a 135i, just to be sure.

Do we get the option of neither?

Buy the 130i and secretly laugh at the masses who opted for the diesel 1 Series.

love the replies!!

so, the masses would go for the golf, but the posters would go for the 130!

oh, just to add another element to the pot and answer one of the first posts, the gti would be remapped, sharpish

If your thinking Golf then I'd be tempted for the Scirocco Instead.

I think EVO rated the Scirocco over the GTI in a recent edition.

Cheaper than the GTI and Bluefin chip roughly takes it to around the 250BHP mark.

130i

I was in the same position earlier in the year and i went for the 130i after driving both.
Loved them both but the 130i has that engine and is a better place to be and if you can refrain from pushing on you can squeeze 350+ miles from a tank of fuel.
I went for a 3 door though as prefer the look to the 5 door,i will be ditching the run-flats as soon as they wear out as that is my only real criticism as they make the ride really crashy.

Yes its not as focused as my previous 3 cars but its discreet, quick,RWD,great fun and cheaper to insure.

But as they say,the decision is yours

I'd drive both. Having come from a 4-pot turbo (Astra VXR) and gone to a Straight 6 (Z4 Coupe); I'm fairly sure the noise of the 130 will sell it for you!

The lure of that sonorous 6 cylinder engine was far too hard to resist so i decided to go with the bmw!

man alive the thing can shift!
