Convertible drivers - why keep the roof up?

I totally agree that things can get silly, but as long as it doesn't descend into name calling or offensive posting I don't see it as a problem personally or understand why people feel the need to comment. Plenty of threads on here to keep everyone amused surely?
You did call the other guy a big baby...Trevatanus said:
Just after I bought my first F, I went to my first MG "meet", which was held at Goodwood circuit.
Justifiably proud of my new purchases, I spent hours the day before cleaning and polishing it.
Left Sandhurst in brilliant sunshine, as I traveled further down the A3, it got progressively darker.
As I was nice when I left home, I fitted the tonneau cover to finish off the "look".
On the A3 about 10 miles before Goodwood it started to rain, but we decided to push on, a) because it wasn't a problem due to it being light rain, and b)the tonneau takes a minutes or so to remove and you have to open the boot.
After a few minutes, we hit roadworks and slowed to a crawl, at the exact same moment the light rain turned to a hail storm. We were instantly drenched. We got the strangest looks, but we were soaked to the skin, so just continued the journey laughing. There's something a little odd about convertible owners
There is that, I agree; that would be me. Justifiably proud of my new purchases, I spent hours the day before cleaning and polishing it.

I have a house in the south of France. If I'm not using it am I being wasteful? But then if I do use it am I being wasteful of the house in the UK? Same goes for the boat on the Canal du Midi - if we go there instead of the house maybe we shouldn't have bought the house as obviously we have chosen to spend our holiday away from the house.
I have two cars (both soft tops incidentally), should I use them both all the time? Oh hang on - I can't.
Just because we have something we don't have to use it all the time. Sometimes the pleasure of having something is in not using it all the time.
People buy what they want for their own reasons and use those things in the way they see fit. Its not up to others to decide if thats right or wrong as they have no way of knowing or understanding the circumstances or thought processes that drove those decisions.
If people choose to buy a soft top and not put the roof down its their choice based on their preferences, experience and circumstances at that time. I don't put the roof down on either of my cars at every opportunity. It may be I'm just popping to the shops so can't be bothered for the 3 minutes driving I'll be doing. Maybe I've just washed the car and the roof is wet (I never fold the roof when its wet). Maybe I don't want any buffeting or external noises coming into the car. It may be I just want to listen to something on the stereo without inflicting it on every other person in the area.
My car, my choices, my compromises. I don't understand why people are getting so upset about it.
You're wasting your breath... they're not listening... (but you are of course completely right)I have two cars (both soft tops incidentally), should I use them both all the time? Oh hang on - I can't.

Indeed. I imagine the ensuing bout of pneumonia and huge repair bill due to electrical faults and damaged upholstery always brings a smile.
Nah. For a Winter's day, jacket, hat, gloves, heated seats, open air - exhilarating.Maybe take multi vitamins too
Oh, and no electrical faults or damaged upholstery. All fine.

Yeah, well, you have opened another can of worms now.
My boat house car pool also has a BBQ. Now, how do I cook, gas or briquettes? The purist in me says charcoal, as briquettes are a bit fancy however gas is more convenient as the gas bottles are not worried about the water where as a bag of charcoal sinks and will need drying out. But to be seen cooking with gas.........
I dare not say a word - whatever I say, someone will take offence and post about how offensive it is and how "oh my GERD...do we HAVE to have this thread every time there's a barbeque?" etc etc...My boat house car pool also has a BBQ. You'd have thought so, but you can never quite tell with these things.
Out of interest, after 22 pages of discussion do you feel any the wiser as to the answer to your original question?
Actually, yes - there are some fairly interesting replies and reasons. Mixed in with some "if I want to own a convertible but don't like the fresh air, then how dare you even question me having a convertible?!" responses... Out of interest, after 22 pages of discussion do you feel any the wiser as to the answer to your original question?

The final word?
Had 30 mile trip planned with no wish to pose or please others.
Have Mercedes convertible.
Weather so hot would have been uncomfortable even with a/c on.
Took wife's a/c equipped saloon Juke.
Journey was relaxed & comfortable.
Today bright but cooler, convertible with roof down a joy.

I rarely put the roof down as most journeys I make nowadays are less than 25 mins duration and mostly stuck in traffic.
Thought most convertibles I see at weekends with the roof down are usually occupied by a middle aged male driver and a very grumpy and reluctant looking female passenger
Well next time you see me and my wife, do wave! Thought most convertibles I see at weekends with the roof down are usually occupied by a middle aged male driver and a very grumpy and reluctant looking female passenger
