E30's make good sleepers while at the same time actually being enjoyable to drive. It's amazing the variety of engines people manage to stuff into them but these are two of my favorites.

I can't agree with that. Anything with a prestige badge like Merc or BMW etc is not a sleeper IMHO. A sleeper has to be a shed. A nondescript, run-of-the-mill car with the aerodynamics of a brick that has performance exponentially greater than what you'd expect.

Since when has a 'Beirut minicab' been anything other than just another car? What is this strange obsession with ordinary cars built in Germany? They are not special just because they've been assembled by Herman in Stuttgart. A 450SEL 6.9 is special, a 200E is not. An M5 is special, a 316 isn't. Prestige badge? Marketing babble for the hard-of-thinking.

Our gardener's son has a MK1 Golf L with a G40 engine. Other than sligthly wider wheels, it looks absolutely stock, but goes like stink

The V10 E30, while a cracking car, isn't really a sleeper as it is based on an M3

best quote on that thread

"There are so many starving children in the world that could be fed for years with the money it took to build that car. And I would line them all up in a line and hit them at 180mph WITH this car."
