Have you driven one? They don’t feel wide, even though I admit they are.

Yes. I agree they don’t feel unwieldy but you can’t change the laws of physics and when you’re on a narrow road or lane with a van or bigger coming the other way it’s handy for your car not to be wider that a limo.

Lots of people have no real judgement of the width of their car and where it can fit anyway though!!
