RE: SOTW: MG ZS 180
Discussion
Interesting read.
I've owned this one since December last year and it's been fantastic. No problems at all to report - it was owned by an old chap since day one and he spent a fair few quid in maintenance. Including having the cam belts done luckily.
If you bin the standard airbox (which comepletely strangles the engine) and fit a proper enclosed cold air induction kit its quite common to gain 10-13bhp which takes it up to circa 190bhp.
Whilst the performance is good, its not mind blowing and obviously there are many things far quicker on the road but the sheer value for money is hard to beat.
The cars best attribute is its handling - even in standard guise its quite remarkable and enables it to keep pace with more powerful machines on a twisty B road thrash.
It's also (in my opinion) a very well screwed togther car. Very comfortable on long journeys and even returns 40mpg if you hover at 60mh ish. Gun it round town and its near 15mpg at best.
anyway I'm quite happy with mine. Not to everyones taste I know, but thats another reason to own one!

Resurecting this thread to show off what I bought at the weekend:
It's been lowered a little, which may or may not be a good thing. It makes a nice sound, pleasant but not annoyingly loud. Finish isn't as good as on the pre-facelift models and the body kit is a bit Max Power, but I can't see it from the inside. I'm tempted to go down to 16" wheels to see if the taller sidewall softens the ride a little.
The last owners brother was a Rover mechanic, so it's had a couple of upgrades including a catch tank to help protect the VIS motors and two lights to show when they open.
A quick googling shows that the car in the OP and is being maintained, which is good.

However I can’t find one anywhere!!
They're out there, but no one in their right mind would buy one as an investment although values seem to be rising a little. My one's last owner had it for ten years and only sold it to make space for something (much) faster. If I hadn't ponced like a kitten on a leaf, this one would have (probably) sold by the next evening.BrassMan said:

Now i've got an image of Brassman poncing around like a kitten in his ZS180!Very few of these survive due to low value can be expensive to keep them going, rust etc.
I'm still annoyed at scrapping my one which was one of the better mk1 180's left but once they need a few jobs doing not worth the cost. Great to drive when going.
I still have a load of nice bits from my last one if anyone needs a spares package, K&N kit, clutch cylinder kit (dark designs) inlet mani, exhaust and 6 x 17" alloys with 4 x good tyres will put an ad in classifieds.
I always wonder how they compare to the presumably more laid back Rover 45 with the V6 engine.
Hubnut on YouTube ran a V6 45 for a while, and it seemed like a totally competent (if not particularly fast) cruiser - especially for the £375 he paid for it.
Only 39 left on the road if the eBay advert I just found is telling the truth.
