Knowing what I know now, if I could go back and do-over I'd go into O&G. I fell into IT instead which isn't a bad alternative but the variety and earnings potential of O&G seems pretty good (or was until this slump!).
This latest crisis has been awful for many families involved. The company I work for laid off 18000 employees. There are still massive cuts, the only thing the upper management are concerned with is short term P&L. Nobody is safe anymore. It's not a good industry to be around right now.
Journalism looks easy enough. Do you, need qualifications to get in?

I had the misfortune of falling into banking operations and while I'm good at what I do I'm currently scratching my arse whilst looking for work following redundancy. Like many on here I wish I'd gone into IT :-/

I know people in the USA who can't go to the doctor when they're ill because they can only afford health insurance for their children. Hospitals like to charge silly money and add all sorts to people's bills which the insurance companies then play games over to get out of paying for. Like this chap who got a $55,000 bill for an appendectomy which he "only" had to contribute $11,119.23 towards. Imagine being a 20 year old student or being a young person on a basic wage with little in the way of savings not only having to cover the cost of health insurance but having to find that kind of money for essential medical treatment. It's even worse if you have something ongoing.

Some people in this country do claim what they can and run away from what they owe because they think the world owes them a living. A lot do genuinely try to do the right thing and work hard but still struggle. Not everyone has the same educational opportunities and encouragement and help in applying for jobs. Getting on in life can often just be about having a confident, or even brash, attitude and a good line in bullst. It's easy to stand in judgment of people when you've done all right for yourself but being better off doesn't necessarily just mean you're trying harder than other people.

Yes you do and it isn't as easy as you might think, at least not if you do it properly. Is the writer in this case a Journalist or a columnist? One reports the news the other voices their opinion. My wife is a journalist and wrote for a News Paper in the same group as that one.

Just a lttle addendum. While there's no official news, it would appear Ms. Stewart is longer working for the Herald or Evening Times. Her bio has been pulled from their list of authors, and the offending article is the last one she published. Would have been nice for some form of editorial apology. After all, some editor let it be published, unless he/she is also out on their ear?

I had to go back a few pages to get the context of this. I now realize you meant Oil & Gas, rather than the Obstetrics & Gynaecology that I'd originally assumed. It did seem a bit odd to fall into IT instead of Obstetrics & GynaecologyTwo of the editors resigned last week, the Herald used to be a quality newspaper but I'm afraid that it has gone downhill rather suddenly. Douglas Park used to advertise weekly in the Drive section, he sells Maserati and McLaren, so I would doubt he shares the views of Miss Short. She won't be missed
