The hybrid trickery bits are actually not bad, as long as you stay within the electric only range. However, the rest of the car is catastrophically rubbish unfortunately.........
Hi there. In what way are they so bad do you think?

As a conflicted eco worrier / petrol head i have often considering buying a hybrid and always decided they were too rubbish. Looking and to drive. The ampera is the first one that has me going ooh that looks nice. But I havent driven one yet. However its what Ive reallt been waiting for. Electric only drive and the petrol is there just as backup power.

What they rally need though is "ringtones". An external speaker that generates engine sounds so you dont accidentally run blind (or stupid) people over. They could come preinstalled with anything from a 1.6 normally aspirated, through corevette/V8, F1 V10 or a tie fighter. Whatever. Personally I'd like the sound of the cricket crowd when the bowler is running up to the wicket, LOL.

Nevermind... its still too expensive ( i can get a used XF S and a prius and a triumph street triple for the same money).

Maybe better to wait till a few turn up crashed, pinch the hybrid electric bits and drop it in a light weight atom style kit car smile

it really is a no-brainer as BIK tax is virtually nothing.
Sorry in 2015 the BIK goes from 5% to 14 or 15%, no emission vehilces are being brought in line with normal cars. Triples the tax.

The engine will start up very occasionally if it hasn't needed to for a while, just to make sure it still works. Most people's commutes are under 25 miles each way (under 12.5k miles a year) so could easily make it there and back on a charge, which costs about £1.50 in electricity, maybe less if you have a cheaper overnight tariff.

Someone in a 50mpg diesel would pay just under £1600 in fuel so do that mileage. The electricity would be £375.

It's a pretty nice idea especially if you spend any time in traffic. Slated as the Prius, etc are they are incredibly relaxing to creep along in jams, devoid of any engine noise at all. A plug-in hybrid or extended-range EV like the Ampera makes a lot of sense for the sort of commute I do - 23 miles in all, a crawl through North London then a blast up the M1 then a crawl into St Albans. Then if you really did need to do London to Edinburgh in one sitting you can - even when the battery gets depleted it'll do high-40s mpg on the motorway with the engine feeding power into the batteries to keep you going. Just a shame I only park on the street and the garage I rent has no power either.

re: pedestrians not hearing it, it does have a button on the stalk that gives a polite little "toot-toot" to warn people you're coming if you think they haven't seen you.

It gets abot 50ish miles in ev mode
Not in my hands, nor in most drivers' AIUI. I got about half that. Once battery is used up, then mpg's not great.

The Prius Plug In worked better in my hands overall, and that's the (company) car I selected as a result. Much to like about the Ampera, mind, depending on your journey profile.

You sure?

Just checked on my usual oracle - ComCar:

VEHICLE BENEFIT TAX

Tax year to 5th April 2013/14 2014/15 2015/16
P11D value £34,940 £34,940 £34,940
Percentage charge 5% 5% 5%
Benefit in kind £1,747 £1,747 £1,747
Tax payable at 20% £349 £349 £349
Tax payable at 40% £699 £699 £699

(badly formatted, but it shows tax staying the same)

A nice looking car but someone in a different thread pointed out the strips of black plastic on the doors (which I'd never noticed) which make the windows look bigger. Look gash. Still consider one if they were cheaper.

True. They were little shoulder level secondary windows on the concept.
