Not to mention that the fuel figures the Yahoo article uses (to demonstrate improvements in efficiency versus an older car) are largely bks.

No new car ever gets remotely close to the claimed figures in the real world. In fact, the disparity between claim and real world seems to get larger every generation. A lot of old cars actually achieve their original mpg claims as they were tested properly before the eco-bullst led manufacturers to have to try and fix the tests in order to beat an arbitrary CO2 figure.

Err... the tag line on the article header is:

'Running costs of brand new cars are significantly cheaper and the savings could outweigh the extra cost in the long-run'

So the point of the article is to prove new cars are cheaper to run than older cars and this may mean they are cheaper overall than older cars.

Pointless 'do bears st in the woods' type article.

The depreciation only matters if you're going to sell it, folks. If, like many, you buy a car and keep it forever then it's quite possible a new one is the better bet.

Your shed MAY cost you £100 a month for maintenance.
But a new £5,000 car WILL cost you £160 a month in HP payments. WITH MAINTENANCE ON TOP OF THAT!

The depreciation determines the purchase price of the second hand car, so it does matter even if u you don't intend to sell your car until it is scrap. If you are comparing the total cost of owning a new car to a second hand car, you can't ignore the difference in the purchase prices.
