Thanks for all the suggestions. Spent last weekend visiting dealers and driving various cars and we've put down a deposit on a nearly new pre-facelift Focus ST-3 which, while not the fastest or the most competent handling, did surprisingly provide the most giggles per mile of the bunch with a "devil on your shoulder" attitude that made the drive the most enjoyable and memorable and even got my daughter's seal of approval (she became obsessed with BMW when I got the 120d!)

Pick it up Saturday ... can't wait biggrin

Exactly why I went from a flame spitting Evo to the Alfa. I can enjoy it at sane speeds and the old school feel really appealed. It's not had the flaws ironed out so you still get a tug of torque steer, a spin of the inside wheel, a bit of body roll so you know where you are in terms of remaining grip. People, it seems, no longer want these things. They want everything anodyne and perfect. Good choice in the ST. It came a close second to the Alfa when I was looking. Very similar to drive with the choice being made on the basis of one having an Alfa badge... wink
